Nope. Mine was completely useless. I made the mistake of hiring someone who advertised themselves as taking a non-confrontational approach. I did however get my divorced finalized in less than a year.

Hey brother. I live in the Chicagoland area too and feel your pain. I would recommend trying to find a cheaper place to live. You may be farther away from your kids, but it will be worth it. I currently pay $1500 a month for a two bedroom in Jefferson Park.

He finds out the truth and then what? It won’t improve anything and will quite possibly destroy his relationship with his son. I don’t see how it’s worth it.

Don’t do it man. If you raised him, he’s your son, regardless of whether he’s your biological child or not.

I groveled and begged my ex-wife to stay together, but I think I had Stockholm syndrome after years of her psychological abuse. Once I moved out of the house, I was like hell yeah - I’m free!

I’m really sorry brother. Unfortunately, the only thing that will truly help you heal is time. Like everyone else has said here, you are not alone.

My failure was knowing that she was an awful person and still marrying her. At least I got a beautiful daughter out of it.

You would have to provide documentation to the court about your job. Unless you plan on lying to the judge.

You can’t do that in Illinois. The courts ruled that you still have to pay the same amount of support if you purposely take a job that pays less or quit.

If I may ask, where do you live?

I lost because the Illinois courts said that a change in the law does not constitute a substantial change in circumstances that allows the non-custodial parent to modify child support. Now a change in the non-custodial parent’s income i.e. an income increase is a substantial change in circumstances that allows for modification. It’s a double edged sword because if my ex files a petition for modification then support would be changed based on the new law which factors in both parent’s incomes. As…

Our marriage settlement agreement says I’m supposed to pay X amount of child support per month based on 20% of my net income at the time. There is no language in our agreement that addresses increases in support based upon higher income. In Illinois, child support modifications can only occur based upon a substantial change in circumstances. She never filed a petition for modification so there are no court orders stating that I owe her more.

We divorced in 2016. At the time I was making about 10k less than my ex. The law in my state (Illinois) at the time said that child support for the non-custodial parent was an automatic 20% of net income. Later that year, I received a substantial, unexpected salary adjustment that boosted my income by about 18k. She found out about this through my end of year bonus paystub which I’m required to give to her and demanded more child support. I should note that she receives child support directly fr…

It’s more like I hate myself for marrying her.

I agree that the idea of a sole breadwinner is pretty antiquated. Most households need two paychecks these days. My ex basically wanted me to bust my ass so she could lead a life of leisure as a house wife. She promised to get so much done around the house if she didn’t have to work which I knew was bs. For most of our marriage, I made significantly more than her and she was worked part time when our daughter was born. Around 2013 she got a job that paid her significantly more than me. She still…

Similar situation to yours. I am also a librarian, but my ex-wife was one as well. Her issue wasn’t with me being a librarian, but rather that I didn’t make enough money and wasn’t in management. In terms of chores, I did the cooking, cleaning, and shopping which she deemed unmanly. The irony is that if I didn’t do them, they would never get done because she refused to do them or help. She also held it against me that I wasn’t handy even though she knew that going into our marriage. I did my bes…

I would consider it if she’s willing to sign a prenup.

My last girlfriend was 17 years younger than me. We started dating when I was 41 and she was 24.

First question: do you love this woman? Second question: is she a loving and supportive wife? Third question: is the fact that she isn’t earning enough hurting the two of you financially? Fourth question: what amount of money does she need to make in order to make you happy? Fifth question: did the two of you go into this relationship with the understanding that both of you would work full-time? Sixth question: in the absence of earning more money, what amount of chores / household responsibilit…

Don’t romanticize what marriage was like 100 years ago. Back then the guy got the girl pregnant and then they were forced to get married. There were plenty of loveless, unhappy marriages. My grandfather treated my grandmother like shit and she was forced to stay with him because she couldn’t support herself on her own. The problem with modern marriage is that society has changed. People are living longer. Women no longer need a man to take care of them financially. The institution of marriage ne…

My ex-wife kept my last name. It annoys me because she hates my family. I would prefer that she goes back to her maiden name, but am not going to lose sleep over it.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
