No, that's not what I got from the replies to this thread. I got that impression elsewhere. I appreciate all of the replies to this thread. If I was expecting something in particular, I wouldn't have asked.

The Princess Bride is the ugliest romance I've ever seen. Talk about putting pussy on a pedestal. Westley needs to learn how to next. He's really lucky that his love is eventually reciprocated; the odds are not on it, dude. Sacrificing everything, in reality, leads to resentment and blindness to the other's sacrifices. Terrible role model for men. The princess (does she even have a name?) is utterly ineffectual in any capacity. Her sole display of agency is the threat of self-destruction. She is…

I know you won't believe me, but I'm really happy to hear that. I'm not as invested as you think. I hope that you discover something that I find interesting. I also hope that it's good practice.

I think her views are great, fine. She seems like a nice person. Her language suggests an entire school that you're unlikely to see any RPers accept-- and that I don't accept myself. I also think she's ignoring some middle ground, and judging "gender essentialism" (which is like all things, not really one thing, but a spectrum; she should reject philosophical essentialism first lol) on the arguments and behaviors of its worst adherents rather than its best. Second thing first. Most of her argume…

Can't change the view. Failure of empathy is a serious human problem. (It's not, however, a problem for which we each receive an equal share. That RP deserves empathy, like all humans do, doesn't change that empathy appears to be a fucking huge deficiency in TRP.) Most guys who flock to rp tend to have a rather fucked up history with women I bet that this is true sometimes, but even then, kind of facile. One step up would be, "They have a rather fucked up history with their perception of women."…

I can't change your view, at least, not in the most general sense of your view. In Self-Made Man, Vincent writes, How could it be otherwise?... Their refusal to see men as individuals... doomed them from the start.... They seemed to transform each new man, benign or otherwise, into the malginancy they were expecting him to be.... These women were mostly hostile in the first place because they felt that men's bad behavior had made them so, and the men they met behaved badly because hostility bree…

I am so unwilling. You should still do what I said: make some really great fucking science, enlist help from the other side to address all possible concerns, make it just airtight, really fucking meticulous, then post it so you can laugh at my hypocrisy when I deny its conclusions that are so obvious and rock-solid that you're about to get them through peer review and published into a journal. The more meticulous, the more obvious it is how full of shit I am, so just do it right. Don't want to l…

No, I don't think you're looking at a useful piece of data. I haven't verified your statistic, but I believe it, because it's not at all surprising that women would be responsible for more child abuse than men-- after all, they spend much more time in child care. Let's make up a hypothetical. France organizes violence against French citizens by nationality of offender, then looks at the counts-- holy fucking shit! French people are responsible for millions of times more violence against other Fr…

Most of the domestic violence against children is done by the mother. I believe that is a much worse expression of not being nice or principled. I can certainly understand that perspective. It's interesting how things change depending on how you slice the pie. You are still arguing like men are less nice than woman I don't know what you're referring to.

This whole thing sounds like a really cool project. Just remember, bad science is worse than no science, so take your time with it and do it right-- ie, it's not happening during the lifetime of this thread. You want something that doesn't just convince people on your side, but affects people in the middle or on the other side. A good way to start planning is to organize with an enemy. Not me though, I'm too lazy. Find somebody who disagrees with your hypothesis but is as interested in exploring…

No. No reason for me to believe so. Not willing to reject out of hand the possibility, or the reverse, although I'm not holding my breath waiting for any unbiased research. i do believe that men, as a whole, are more prone to physical violence than women, and that physical violence is the worst expression of being not nice and not principled.

No. I'm not willing to invest the effort to do that. Are you? I'm not even sure what percentage would indicate anger-- what would you do, compare it to what percentage of posts on TBP are angry at male lies? Part of the point of my asking this thread is to suss things out. What I see is a variety of attitudes. When people are going to be ashamed of their own lies, I'm not going to judge them for being angry at the lies of others. When they're not ashamed of their own lies, I am. Remember the con…

Okay. It probably seemed nitpicky, but there's a reason. Because I can give you 10, 100, 1000 RP posts that I find angry. But I can't tell you if those posters are beginners or not. I don't want to go to a lot of trouble compiling evidence just to be No True Scotsmanned. I can tell you, though, that RP beginners are responsible for part of the RP image. If your experience is that part of the RP process is getting rid of that anger, that's useful to know. Thanks for sharing it.

I totally agree that when that happens, it doesn't help. But I don't agree that it never happens. When, in the recent mansplaining thread, BP posters agreed that the use of "mansplaining" is dumb and offensive, I wrote, I think so many of these arguments would dissappear if people on both side were honest when their allies were being dumb. It's not that hard to say, "Yeah, my friend fucked up, sorry. They're still my friend though, and it doesn't contaminate their other ideas, or my ideas." And,…

No ones angry about it, do you have any proof? The angry stage of RP is only in the beginning. Is no one angry, or are beginners angry? They can't both be true.

Please re-read the comment. I said that morality wouldn't lead to a happy ending. Successful selfishness leads to happiness because that's what selfishness is-- prizing personal happiness over other things. Placing happiness second can only lead to less happiness than placing happiness first.

I don't want to act superior in my ignorance, but the reality is that I'm just not going to read that. My bucket list is still pretty big. But if you want to summarize or paraphrase whatever you found useful from that, I would read it and appreciate that you took the effort to do so.

I didn't have anything particular in mind. But so it's contextual? It's understandable and appropriate in some situations, and not in others? I mean, you sound much more honest than many people replying. I'm just wondering if you ever have trouble taking lies in situations where you might dish them out. (And it's okay if you do, we're only human.)
/r/PurplePillDebate20/05/17 07:56 PM
2

That seems reasonable. I'm wondering about how you handle it when women lie to you. It's something that a lot of RP seems angry about.
/r/PurplePillDebate20/05/17 07:23 PM
2

Their expectation of it doesn't seem to make them any less angry about it when it happens. RP writing on women lying seems very moralistic to me.
/r/PurplePillDebate20/05/17 07:15 PM
1

Kind of vague. Which women? How many of them? I don't think most middle-aged women love drama queens. All women? No. Some women? Yes. Even when getting all emotional might help, it depends on what you're getting emotional about. Going on a rant about how great feminism is will get you laid occasionally. Going on a rant about how great TRP is never will.

Agreed, although I've never met that person. To me, integrity stands in stark contrast to selfishness. Following a purely selfish code doesn't strike me as any kind of code at all. Somebody who tried to fuck everyone over all the time, even when it caused them to fuck themselves over, wouldn't be much of a jellyfish. They sure would be wacky as fuck though :)
/r/PurplePillDebate20/05/17 06:56 PM
1

I would say that any personal integrity involves precisely that, being willing to suffer in order to do the right thing. So yeah, you can expect morality to entail suffering, and lead to a happy ending less often than not. That's what makes it integrity rather than selfishness. So I guess we're all either suckers or jellyfish. Given the two options, I'll still choose sucker.

nor is a world in which everyone freely trespasses against the property of others conducive to the vouchsafing of my property rights Sure, but your own behaviors don't make the world that way. You could as easily say that it's not conducive to your well-being to live in a world where people freely lie. I can totally understand taking an utterly amoral position, though, don't get me wrong. It's not exclusive to RTP in my mind. Please look over what I've written; I've never suggested that it is. In fact, the exact post your replied to is me, with BP flair, admitting to lying.
/r/PurplePillDebate20/05/17 05:44 PM
2

And do you think it's bad to be an asshole in that sense? I ask because I think "asshole" is a term a lot of RP would embrace.
/r/PurplePillDebate20/05/17 05:28 PM
2

Okay, but that doesn't really answer my question. Personally, when I feel lied to, I'm angry at the person who lied to me, even though I have been guilty of lying in the past. I'm angry in a moral sense, in a completely different way than if I suffer in some other fashion like, I dunno, losing a video game. When I lie to advance my own interests, I feel as if I'm behaving spinelessly. It's sort of what I mean when I talk about integrity. Are these ideas and feelings foreign to RP?

No, not at all extreme and unpopular IMO, although I'm not sure how I feel about it myself. It's just a hypothetical example because I'm too lazy to think for more than two seconds about it. If you run into this situation, the precise issues are what matter, not the label.

Even assuming they want LTR with RP, what possible strategy could they employ to both maximize their n-count and still get the RP man at the end.... Hmmm, I wonder....

3

I don't. People can label themselves however they want. The label doesn't matter for anything that I'm interested in. People's decision to label themselves or not is kind of personal, and it has a lot to do with their own identification and comfort, and telling other people what they are or aren't isn't a good way to get past the label to what matters. But I think when it happens, it's a kind of #NotAllFeminists. Here's a situation I see: A: "I'm not a feminist because I think there's nothing wr…

1) Long-term, slow effect. Kids do get exposed to nonsense in college. They mostly outgrow it. When they don't, they become a professor and continue it instead. I think our culture has a lot of these kind of random, irrational artifacts laying around shaping our thinking. The precise ways that they affect us is hard to gauge even in hindsight. 2) Hmm. When I discovered PPD, what I liked was seeing BP and RP making jokes with each other-- it felt like, here, finally, maybe there's some peace and reason. Since starting to pay more attention, I believe that was the exception, not the rule. I wouldn't have called myself BP earlier, because I hold ideas contrary to the most popular varieties of feminism where I live. I feel as if the reasonableness of BP posted on TPPD has led me to think that's inappropriate-- that the things I believe are not in…

Good thing that's where you stopped reading, since that was in the section labelled "Conclusion" at the very end of the paper. Oh wait, you mean you read the summary, right? The cliff notes? Yeah, you didn't actually read anything. But if you're in the habit of interpreting conclusions as premises, I can understand why you'd never bother reading a paper.

Eventually someone with large amounts of influence has to push towards solving Obesity Do you have any idea how much money there is in this? Believe me, there are plenty of people with a lot of money already trying to solve obesity. Trying isn't the same thing as succeeding. Some things are hard, regardless of how much money or influence you throw at them.

It's anecdotal because there's no rigor, not because of who's doing it. There's little recognition of the potential for bias, little effort toward limiting it. When you collect data that way, you end up verifying what you want to believe almost every time, regardless of what you believe. Just like anything, you have to read about it to learn why it's done the way it's done. If you're smart, you could probably get the hang of it by majoring in something like Psych for two years. But that's alread…

Why wouldn't she go on about how egalitarian and progressive she is at a cocktail party? Well, she wouldn't claim to pay evenly dishonestly if she cared about being a liar. There are plenty of ways (lazy, self-serving ways, sure) to both hold SJW beliefs and to insist that men should buy dinner. The reasoning seems circular to me: she's a liar, so we should expect her to lie about going even elsewhere; so when she insists on a guy paying, she's a liar. You say you have plenty of examples, but I …

I think the history of the world is the history of the failure of cohesive ideologies. People end up being too diverse for any particular ideology to be acceptable without modifications. RP is not dominant, it is widely despised, and I don't see any evidence that it is becoming more influential. When it attracts attention, it is due to being a convenient bogeyman. Most people are not very interested in argument. Most people believe that they themselves are correct in their current judgments but …

I'm sorry, are you asking me what possible actions could help bring women into equality (your definition of feminism) without controlling men? I think talking is a great way of doing so. My own behavior has changed over my lifetime, at least partially in response to discussions I've had, and I believe that I treat people differently-- hopefully more fairly-- as a result. If you're not asking me anything, and you actually want to listen to an answer, that would be a really great question to ask O…

That's not obscure, although I have suspicions about it being your complete definition of feminism. But none of her issues here relate to bringing women up to an equal standing. Her fears are of women being brought down to an unequal standing. Honestly, I'm not sure why any of this even matters. If you read her words, you know her position in relative detail. She's not trying to hide anything-- or if she is, she's doing it too well to matter :)

The obvious answer to explain why OP doesn't feel she's a feminist but that you do is that you disagree on what the quintessential beliefs of feminism are. This is not something real. It's just the definition of the word. I like to use the same definitions as the people with whom I'm speaking. You can try something different, but you're going to be spending a lot of time failing to communicate. I don't see the fundamental role collectivism plays in feminism, but I might not understand exactly wh…

I'm perfectly willing to accept the label "feminist." Check the flair. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in your way of looking at things, everybody who holds at least a single tenet of some variety of feminism is a feminist. For instance, if you're pro-porn, you're a feminist, because Ellen Willis argued for porn from a feminist perspective. If you're anti-porn, you're also a feminist, because MacKinnon argued against porn from a feminist perspective. The only way to not hold a feminist position, at…

Feminism isn't a single platform. You can be skeptical of parts of it and supporting of others. I'm sure you've heard people say, "I'm not a feminist but..." or "I support sexual equality but..." Feminist or not-feminist aren't particularly useful categories because they don't say what particular things you actually believe; they're just rough indications to suggest it. Here, OP has been very clear. She didn't stop at the "non-feminist" bumper sticker. She explicitly listed the particulars that …

Thanks, yeah. Men get pissed off at the use of these terms not so much because they're inaccurate, but because they're indicative of a double standard. It's totally unnecessary to ascribe these problems to sex. The root problems are condescension, discourtesy, and stupidity, traits for which neither sex has a monopoly. I think most women should be able to empathize-- they should have much experience with people assigning responsibility for their personal successes and failures not to the themsel…

All of feminism is built around the assumption that women and men are exactly the same. No. The most popular kinds of feminism are built around that assumption (and even then, your phrasing is an exaggeration.) There is a lot of feminist work based around the idea of sexual difference. "Radical Feminism" used to refer to the idea that women and men are fundamentally different, and that the nature of those differences make women more suitable to lead. (But the term has kind of been co-opted by mo…

I can't say I know the first thing about Russia :) TIL. At the same time, older men do compete with young men, even for the attentions of young women. From an evolutionary standpoint, they compete poorly due to declining infertility, but there's no hard cut-off. Looking now at what others have written, I think that I should have written more about the differences of evolutionary pressures and social pressures-- which both have effects, but on completely different timescales.

You're not going to see much altered behavior at 1.05 vs 0.86 M:F. There are still plenty of men in Russia. While I think you're right that men have less reproductive worth than women, that can't be seen as independent of sex ratio. Sex ratio-- including a birth ratio >1 even in Russia-- is part of the reason for that. (Sometimes I wonder if humans evolved in a certain way because the bigger subspecies spent a lot of time killing each other in competition. Nah, that's crazy.) Now, if humans acte…

I have never met a single person who is dominating in every sense. Life is not a game. There are no winners. There is no scoring mechanism. If you want to talk about legitimate strategies, returns, and costs, you've got to define what criteria you're using for success. If you're measuring success only in terms of sex, or number of grandchildren if you want to actually dig into your EvoPsych roots, then no, burning out is not a "legitimate strategy," at least, not until you're infertile. It's about usage. If you want to say, big muscles and arrogance are alpha traits, and shortness and empathy are beta traits, that's fine. But then there are a lot of incorrect conclusions that people tend to reach. Like that shortness and empathy are correlated (when to my knowledge, there's no research suggesting that.) Look at the actual function of these discussions. Are minds changed? Sometimes. But for most people, these discussions are a chance to establish identity. Establishing identity gives you allies, it gives you a sense of self, it gives a sort of unconditional love: if you agree with me, if you're on my side, anything you do is kosher. This falls naturally out of the political power of solidarity and the impotence of individuality. If you want to establish an identity, one of the strongest ways to …

Sexual dissatisfaction is a real issue. Among both women and men. But as to the reasoning-- I find this article pretty shallow. First of all, there's a way-we-never-were kind of thinking to it. Ward Cleaver is not representative of fathers from his era, the same way that Rachel's apartment on Friends is not representative of NY real estate in her income bracket. Not reuturn all the way. But I believe it would move things in that direction, particularly as it affected lower income women, and that would probably have a (maybe mild) proximity effect on higher income women. So, first of all, there's going to be more single-parent babies. Part of welfare, to my mind, is funding services like Planned Parenthood that cater to low income populations. You might be treating the charitable more charitably than they deserve. There's a weird split when it comes to those providing services for homeless people.
