Lol omg our usernames are so close! But I go after the patriarchy loudly in convos with friends and family in public all the time. However, I don’t consider that man hating. I’m criticizing a power structure that’s inherently sexist, not 50% of the population. Men who confuse the two are basically telling on themselves.

What really bothers me is that nothing you said was controversial and you never referenced FDS. I remember reading an article where Orlando Bloom talked about how he quit sex and masturbation because he wasn’t connecting emotionally with women anymore, and so when he met Katy Perry, he could get to know her as a person instead of a potential sex partner. He talked about how it allowed him to focus on affection and emotional intimacy, and helped him realize he wanted to marry her. If a handsome m…

I think the bigger thing is that HE was white. If he'd been a black man, he'd still be in jail right now.

Sorry, it’s a series called Women Behind Bars

It took me a while, I had to go through my Netflix viewing history to track down the title, but it was Women Behind Bars, and the woman whose mother had MbP was Jennifer Blake. She claimed her mother violently abused her, allowed men to molest her, and that her boyfriend, who was obsessed with her, had been living in their shared house and killed her mom. He claims she talked him into killing her mother together. I remember her explaining that her mother basically wouldn't let her leave her home…

I remember watching some Netflix true crime series about women killers. And honestly, no matter how hard they tried to make me hate them, I just felt bad. One girl got convinced by her much older boyfriend that she had to find out information about another girl, so the first girl tortured the second to death. And it was horrible, but the girls were both fifteen and this man was the only person who’d ever loved her. The system failed her first. The second girl killed her abusive father to protect…

Replying to my own post because another member and I were discussing this and I pointed out that R&B had a similar structure, where men talk about self elevation and women talk about self emancipation. What is WAP but saying that if men are going to say all women have a price and “tricks aint nothing but bitches and hos” that women are going to start demanding a fair price? If a man wants a queen, it’s going to cost a kingdom.

As I told my friend, both songs are the same marriage, just farther down the line lol. But seriously I feel like that female country music has such an undercurrent of domestic violence running through it suggests that all these so called country kings talking about their beautiful barefoot Juliets turn out to be the same guys who get drunk all the time, can’t stand hearing their partner disagree with them, and have no outlet for their anger about the dead end system they’re a part of where no on…

That’s a fair point, and I appreciate you being so clear and nonjudgmental in your comment. I’m not making a moral statement, and if people read it as a moral statement, I apologize for offending them. I was just commenting on a scientific study and debating how there can be good intentions around a particular kind of sexual work. As someone else pointed out, it’s a problematic solution, and I agree. I’m merely commenting on how things currently are, not how I would like them to be. No one deser…

That’s a fantastic point and not something I would have necessarily been able to verbalized, so thank you for saying so. I’m not necessarily pro sex work in this situation, but I also admit that I don’t know enough to know a better solution. As someone with a disabled brother I don’t want him to live his life cut off from his sexuality or treated like he shouldn’t be allowed to have a sexual relationship, but I don’t know what the better option is, you know?

Oh man American Beauty. I loved that movie too. The thing is, I rewatched it as an adult, and what I still love are the kids. Plastic bag scene and all. They’re from really damaged backgrounds but they’re so kind and affectionate with each other. The boy has only stayed to protect his mother, and that care transfers to his girlfriend. Neither of them are perfect, but as far as teenage love stories go, it lacks so much toxic bullshit about boys that I was fed through rom-coms. Not in any way perf…

I can see where you’re coming from and I don’t even necessarily disagree with you, I just felt like the writers chose to portray her in a manner that was like “sure she’s a princess but she’s just like a guy except she has nice hair”. Like their portrayal was like, sure she’s pretty but she’s basically one of the guys. I didn’t view the characters as they were presented as a problem, I just disliked that the writers made those choices to present them that way, if that makes sense? Like my issue …

The princess doesn’t even really need rescuing, there’s a knight who tries to stop shrek from coming into the castle but that’s about it. You get the sense the princess was just living her life and shrek went through a lot of trials and tribulations to find her but it was worth it cuz they were perfect for each other as they were and just wanted to be monsters together. I view it as overall pretty wholesome for kids in terms of message while still being fun in a gruesome and unapologetically mea…

It’s a sort of anti fairy tale where shrek, who is horrible and breathes fire, gets kicked out of his swamp and goes to seek his fortune. He does meet a donkey, defeat a dragon, and marry a princess, but he’s never really portrayed as a good guy down on his luck who’s been misjudged. He’s a monster and acts like one. His weakest moment is where he comes face to face with a room full of terrifying monsters only to realize he’s in a hall of mirrors. The princess is reported to be even uglier than …

I remember at the time when I saw it in theatres being really irritated because it made no sense to me why Fiona had to end up an ogre at the end. That wasn’t what she was born looking like, it was literally a curse. She didn’t want to look like that, and it had this whole faux message or accepting herself which would’ve been fine if she’d been born as an ogre and was trying to please her family by disguising herself as a human, you know, body positivity etc. But instead she becomes what Shrek t…

I only learned about it from the perspective of Shakespearean English culture so I'm not sure those would be SUPER helpful, but I did just find a book by Laura Bates called Men Who Hate Women, From Incels to Pickup Artists: The truth about extreme misogyny and how it affects us all, which I shall be reading. I also know the website We Hunted the Mammoth is a great look at the manosphere. It Came From Something Awful by Dale Beran isn't specifically about misogyny in the manosphere but it is abou…

I wanna emphasize that homosocial relationships aren’t bad by themselves. FDS itself is a homosocial environment. It’s when you have a blend of entitlement and power, toxic masculinity, and a homosocial environment, that forms a breeding ground for violence against women, anything from thoughts and hate speech to actual acts of violence and murder.

It’s not necessarily gender specific, though I’d argue because of how the patriarchy works, male homoscial behaviour and norms are less scrutinized and wield more power as well as view women less favourably. Obviously any situation where the genders are separated, like a monastery or a prison, are gonna see a lot of homosocial behaviours. But men and women often didn’t even see each other except at meal times if they could afford it. Rich women spent their times in one section of a home and a ma…

There’s actually a term for it! It called homosocial. It’s basically where while you might not have sex with men, your social sphere and emotional relationships and peer friendships are entirely male and you value those relationships above a female one, or don’t even have an emotional relationship with women. I learned about it when studying Shakespeare’s Othello and it really puts into focus that a lot of men, regardless of sexuality, don’t really view women as someone they can have a peer inte…

Stuff like this always makes me shout. Like who do you think is murdering women here? Aliens? Deer? Other women? No, it’s you! Guys who have this EXACT SAME ATTITUDE. I just end up shouting “the call is coming from inside the house, Brad!” at statements like this.

I am not “pro” sex work, but I also don’t think it should be illegal. Not because I think it’s a good thing, but because to me it being illegal punishes the workers, who are mostly women and young men in crisis, and does nothing to decrease demand. It needs to be really heavily regulated and the focus of it needs to be helping sex workers find better paying and safer work, if they choose to because infantilizing women is never the solution. Offering education, job training, therapy, drug rehab, …

My parents got married, on the one year anniversary of their first date, without a "piece of paper". My dad got a ring, they had a ceremony, a family friend presided, and my parents considered themselves married from that day onward. They signed legal documents five years later but they were already considered common law married and my mother was entitled to the same benefits as a married woman. They got married for tax reasons. Still going strong. The "It's just a piece of papet" women don't re…
