When faced with an aggressive attacker you should keep the upper hand until the threat is incapacitated or they capitulate. Neither happened here. If that teacher wouldn't have stepped in she likely would have really hurt that guy. In a fight for your safety you give it all you have until you at safe again. That is how you logically come to the conclusion that he didn't overreact. I'd say he perilously under reacted.
