He's treating you like an option. I don't like it. It's wishy-washy and plays with your emotions. He literally told you he's trying to figure out whether to bypass you, try again with you, or pick you up in a month or so. Like you're a thing on the shelf, an option with options. No.

Don't compromise on the prenup. And say you'll sign one too, because you want your finances separate. Why? Because you aren't comfortable with his financial decisions and would rather not reconcile your differences on a trial-and-error basis.

I would just say it outright, that you hate to be delivering the news about as much as you hate the decision but you couldn't do anything about the owner's decision to sign a contract with his friend. His department is being removed and he's getting laid off at no fault of his own.

Especially considering that you say you enjoy seeing your SO open the presents you get him... unless you are saying that you buy him presents, at least in part out of a feeling of obligation. If not that, then are you saying that the men who were in line buying flowers were doing it routinely, with none of them buying flowers only occasionally, as you do (with christmas presents)?
