I would say the one with black skin would on average have a harder time, largely due to inherent biases we all have (we tend to like people that are similar to ourselves). The majority of people interviewing are most likely white (because whites are the majority of the country), so they're probably more likely to hire people that are like them. With ES6, javascript has become a pretty nice language to write. I definitely miss the type system of languages like Swift and Scala, but Typescript and Flow let you get somewhere close to that, and can be learned at another time. There is some obvious poor choices that javascript made (like all numbers being floating point), but you can generally work around those. Worth noting: the current version of Learn Python the Hard Way is using Python 2 still, the next version will be updated to use Python 3. It's a fantastic resource, but more and more people are moving towards Python 3.

It might not be a popular opinion, because it's cool to hate on javascript, but I think javascript is one of the most versatile languages. If you want to do desktop app development with JS, there is Electron. If you want to do mobile app development with JS, there is React Native. If you want to do backend development with JS, there is Node.js. Good on you. I graduated college with a comp sci degree and lived at home for ~3 years after (I started out making ~$65k, a decent amount for my area). By the time I was ready to move out I had saved around $100k. Now I'm 28 and have no mortgage or car payment.
