Hiring young women inherently presents more risk than hiring young men because of the chance they take maternity leave. However, it's illegal to discriminate at the hiring stage based on the sex of the applicant. There was a robust program in place to actively encourage more girls to take STEM subjects at A-level (the highest school level in the UK), but even though as a result the numbers of girls in the STEM classes was above the national average, they were still well outnumbered by boys taking those subjects.
