To answer your last question: yes, both partners in a relationship should be putting in effort. Is he not? Almost everything you list sounds like he spent a lot of money on his ex, and he obviously feels like he got burned. Is he stingy with you, or is he just more financially responsible than he used to be? It definitely makes sense to adjust his previous behavior in response to the experience, and it shouldn't be an issue as long as he hasn't overcorrected to the point that you always feel una…

Dude where are you getting any of this? It most definitely sounds like he was taken advantage of financially, and OP says he regrets all the money spent on his ex. It sounds a lot less like he LOVED spending money on her and HATES spending money on current gf, but like he was tricked before and doesn't want to be caught in that position again. The rest of your post has no backing from OP either.

I agree with this. It really sounds like he got burned pretty badly in the previous relationship and didn't have good boundaries around finances specifically. He learned something from the experience and changed his behavior to prevent the same damage from occurring in the future.

I don't think this question has to do with averages, but with accomplishing a difficult task. If the average dude has trouble finding an interesting way to start a conversation with a stranger that would make that person want to engage in response, I would say that's task failure. If 70% of people fail, the people in the 65th percentile get no benefit out of being technically above average.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
