talking about my dog as if I'm some big know it all Knowing things is good, it demonstrates value, just be casual about it and don't bore them. Is there any way for me to make way into small talk and maybe eventually a name or number if I'm lucky? You're already making small talk about dogs, you just need to segue into other subjects from there.

For what it's worth, here's a canned routine I have used in similar situations with good results. It's very simple: Start by having them teach you phrases.
