There's a certain vibe I get from comments like this that I struggle to fully articulate. Like you don't really think it's funny, you're just trying to ridicule it in the hope that hurts someone's feelings. The idea being expressed has offended you, but to admit you are offended would show weakness I guess, so you try to project confidence by feigning laughter? It certainly doesn't come across as genuine. It's as if showing anger would be to admit the thing provoked a negative emotional reaction…

I very much enjoy playing with children, I realise I’m different from the average man there Are you though? I think the average man probably does enjoy e.g. playing sports with their younger relatives. This was a normal part of spending time with extended family when I was a child, and I never got the impression that it was seen as a chore.

I live in the UK too and as far as I am concerned this whole idea of having a "x month" is made up nonsense imported from America. Of course something is going to get "overshadowed" - there are only 12 months in a year and there are more than 12 things. I suspect the idea only caught on because corporations saw it as a good business opportunity.

on the other thread to the person in this screenshot you said the fight for AMAB people’s issues was more important than transphobia but you said you still empathize with them, so I’m not sure what you meant by that. It's a topic that gets heated a lot, and angry people sometimes take out their anger on someone who appears to disagree. Whether that disagreement is a tiny detail or an irreconcilable difference in values an emotionally charged situation can lead to being shouted down when all you'…

But people give you a legal sex, not a legal gender. This is the assignment. Ah, I hadn't considered it as assigning a legal label. In that context the terminology makes a lot more sense. However, I was responding to a comment that said this: The idea of having been assigned a specific sex and then your brain being another one has existed for thousands of years which would not appear to be discussing a legal concept. The wording above seems anachronistic to me in that context - it would make mor…

Call me a contrarian, but personally I agree with the specific criticism of the wording "assigned sex at birth", it's simply not compatible with a distinction between sex and gender as concepts. Assigned gender at birth" would make sense, a gender can be "assigned" in the sense that the individual's gender identity is assumed to match their birth sex and assigned to them. A person's sex at birth is a biological reality (with some statistical outliers in intersex individuals) that is observed or …

It's because mainstream or progressive liberalism at its worst justifies "punching up" i.e. blaming all of societies ills on white cisgender men. Those men feel attacked by progressivism as a whole, but may be supportive of class-based activism and left wing politics that focuses more on economic issues than sociocultural ones.

I sympathise with you here, but the previous user was right about this: TERFs hate us because they see us as men, not women, and apply gendered misandry to us. ...and that's the irony, isn't it? In applying gendered misandry to trans women and men alike, we find ourselves with common cause. Perhaps we can postpone debate on the correct collective noun to use when addressing such a grouping and instead work together against the misandry thing, yeah?

What has been clarified is that legislation which contains discrete provisions for both sex and gender, applies discretely to sex and gender. This is good. For sex and gender to be conflated only hurts our ability to communicate honestly and plainly.

I'd like to share some more of my thoughts here. They might not be ordered in a very coherent way. You are welcome to ignore them if you are bored of this particular topic now. Are there any particular criticisms of Tommy Robinson you have? You do come across as quite partisan in your staunch defence of his character so I think if you were to offer a more nuanced view you might be more likely to convince others that you don't have a narrative to push. Personally my distrust of you and your words…

On a more personal note, I think I would have been more willing to hear you out at first if you came across as less... smug? Patronising? Arrogant? I'm not sure what the right term is, but I think the way you write doesn't help your cause. I say this as an attempt at constructive criticism. I'm not totally convinced, but yeah, consider my mind changed. If he is far-rig…

What you are claiming is what the EDL said, not what actually was. You accuse other sources of being biased while parroting the lies of a group that in practice attracted violent thugs and racists who appreciated the veneer of respectability offered by those lies. I'm sure you'd be happy to explain how Tommy Robinson's association with football hooliganism is an unfair characterisation of his loyal support of his local team, or how his criminal conviction for assault was somehow unjust or undese…

For anyone reading this, the EDL (English Defence League) was founded in Luton (a city notorious for its association with violent football hooliganism) as a far-right nationalist group by a man who had been convicted and gone to prison for assault. Naturally, spokespeople for the group claimed they were against violence, but their actions speak louder than words. It's central ideology was opposition to Islam, and scandals around grooming gangs were merely one talking point among many. This is al…

you on the other hand have a great deal of insight into us (the US I mean). The English speaking world does because of how dominant American media is. You have about 5x our population so even if the UK outperforms you per capita in e.g. the music industry it isn't enough to compensate. it goes on and on about how their bad behavior is linked to "trauma, abuse, and loss". About the girls are often victims themselves. Of course, this is all true of the boys as well. This is standard bias that exists where people look for first causes with girls who are in trouble. "How did she end up this way? Who victimised her? What trauma did this?" etc. Meanwhile boys and men are thrown to the wolves. I agree with you. The article says about these girls They will now be held in secure childr…

It's because there are only 11 such girls in the entire country and there is no point setting up a youth prison for 11 inmates. It's a sensible idea but the optics and some of the political discussion around it are not good.
/r/MensRights21/03/25 08:31 PM

Shouldn't there already be protocol that can handle 11 girls? To be fair it does sound like a waste of money to build a whole prison to house 11 inmates. I'm not opposed to the idea of not locking-up 11 children, but the stated reasoning for doing so is concerning. If they announced this without the bullshit moralising misandry I'd even describe it as sensible.

"Because capitalism" is used a bit like "because misogyny" as a buzzword that obfuscates any nuance and obstructs any more detailed discussion of a topic. Convenient for short and lazy social media posts stating your political identity and allegiance, not so convenient for constructive debate or exchange of ideas.

Sections of the left don't tolerate dissent. If you can't disagree without being shouted down or ostracised for failure to conform that doesn't change what you think. I agree - Identity politics is the problem. If it has a flag it's not unifying, it's divisive. People like flags. Flags are fun! They are also an overt symbol of tribal identity and allegiance. Whether it be nationality, political leaning, sexuality or a sports team, the trouble with flags is they separate humans into an "us" and a "them". The end result is always the same - humans show loyalty to and suport for "their side" on the assumption of shared aims without fully verifying the whole stor…

Not to start a fight, but the the most infamous example of a "left path" in recent history was... Ah, you know what I'm trying to say. The Soviet Union was awful for using men as cannon fodder. Collectivist ideologies lionize individual sacrifice for the good of the collective, whether they be "left" or "right". That said, "more left" than the US is a pretty broad area. I'd prefer not to have these things be attacked, I get enough of that from the social justice types. I'm all for cynicism, but I'd urge some caution here. It's also possible that some of those 40% are overly self-critical and that they "could see themselves" doing it is a reflection of their own low self-esteem. Below are some thoughts I have had, which may or may not be helpful. Discussion of political terms is difficult because they are so dependant on the time and place they are used. The western world in the 20th and 21st centuries is perhaps the most individualist society to exist since the dawn of civilization. To take a vague and broad view of post-Roman Western history, power used to lie with feudal lords in a highly ordered power structure, this power was eroded and replaced by the rising capit…

The revolutionary spirit the capital hill riots of 2021 at the hande of the conservatives should teach us that conservatism support the preservation of a specific power. I wouldn't call this conservative. A revolution seeks to topple the established order (democracy in this case). Perhaps this is really just semantics, but I find it helpful to make this distinction. I think morality should not be a competition about who has it best/worst, that's a destructive way of thinking. It is possible to attempt to subjectively judge suffering and attempt to relieve the worst suffering first, and it may in extreme cases be necessary to do so (e.g. if you are a paramedic), but fundamentally if a person's suffering is genuine it should not be dismissed or ignored altogether. I do think that there is a distinction to be made between trans women (MtF) and biological women That's sort of the issue isn't it? It's a distinction that is important to some of us, but that we feel we are pressured into being ashamed of making. I can pretend not to make this distinction as a courtesy, but I can't fundamentally alter how my brain has instinctively categorized people based on biological sex my entire life.

The way I see the term "trans rights" used in most online spaces is as a way of signalling which political team you are on, much like "feminist". It's used to identify oneself as adhering to the progressive political orthodoxy, without any detail of what rights they claim to support or views they wish to advocate for. I must admit I find this rather annoying.

Women or even feminists only care about the parts of toxic masculinity and patriarchy that affect women. I think it's best not to generalise women like this, it can weaken your argument and be used against you. Feminism is an ideology that a person chooses to follow or believe, women are not.

I think the fact our society distinguishes sexuality as hetero vs homo rather than attracted to women vs attracted to men affects how we think about this subject. Male gaze seems to really mean "people who are attracted to women gaze", with the implicit assumption that males as a group are to blame. You can't force someone to have an open mind. Discrimination can occur in any "direction" and towards any group. But it's true isn't it? You can argue the specifics of which roles each sex is predisposed to, but the fact remains that there are biological differences between the sexes on average which influence how effective a person is likely to be at a particular role. As others have said, language evolves and it is frustrating when phrases we used to mean one thing now mean another. Earlier today I saw this post. Language is all about perspective. In the UK people will try to "catch out" politicians on transgender issues by asking them to define what a "woman" is. Our brains are wired to fear social rejection because of the damage this can do. Pre-civilization humans lived in small communities. Not just racial but cultural and religious - there are people in the UK for example who would support refugees from Ukraine or Hong Kong but not from a majority Islamic country. Often racial prejudice is a sort of "collateral damage" thing from e.g. mistaking a sikh for a muslim because both appear to be racially of Indian origin. There's no way to really "prove" the Nazis were wrong for example, there's nothing objectively wrong about racial supremacism even if the science used to justify it is false. I think that's the point - make someone offer their reasoning then show their reasoning to be false. But I agree that this does require someone to submit to the process of a fair discussion, so do we enforce that? Would that be right? I feel like at least recently there has been an assumption in western nations that humanis…

I cannot disagree more. Freedom to discuss ideas, especially controversial ones, is the cornerstone of a free society. Human society does not improve by burying our heads in the sand. We must confront these ideas with rational argument. Racism is best confronted by acknowledging human propensity to it and seeking to better understand why this is. If we shame people for having ideas, we don't change their minds, we convince them that they are being treated unfairly, causing them to double-down an…

Don't accept it, but do acknowledge it. Rather than working to destroy the person who experiences the feeling of distrust, work with the person to help them to trust others. It requires humility to reject your own desire to engage in eye for an eye conflict and instead work with your enemy to help them to become a better person. When we feel angry or distrustul, or when we are suffering, most of us find it hard to believe that, and easy to believe in more direct methods. It is easy for the happy…

This is an idea I've noticed in online spaces which I was surprised by - the nature vs nurture argument seems to align with political identity. Nature is seen as right wing and nurture as left wing. I think this is perhaps more true in American politics than other places, which could explain why it is surprising to me. we should at least be trying to massively minimize it through cultural conditioning. This is abhorrent, we shouldn't be trying to condition anyone! People should be free to think …

saying "I don't feel save going out because of <demographic>" should be considered prejudice, even if stats back it up. I'm sorry if this comes across as intrusive psychoanalysing of your writing, but the wording on this is interesting. "Should be considered" is a very particular way of expressing what you say here, as if you feel the need to reaffirm your commitment to being against prejudice. Because we can't escape the truth that certain demographics are more likely to commit certain crimes. …

I'm confused, why are you using this gender discourse debate as an example of "elite neutral meeting grounds" when you are claiming that they don't exist for gender discourse?

"elite neutral meeting grounds," What does this mean?
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates15/08/22 11:34 PM

The above leaves me feeling like, sadly, an intellectual mainstream community for gender discourse may not be possible today. Is this possible for any political topic? Politics as a whole is growing increasingly divided in the western world.

Why do you believe I am missing your point? I believe I understand you perfectly. they are the only ones responsible for their feelings. I've grown up with an autistic sister. When I've taken the attitude of her feelings being her responsibility, that it isn't my responsibility to go out of my way to avoid offending her, it has usually ended in her shouting and screaming at me. Occasionally, she has thrown small objects at me. When I instead respond by biting my tongue and keeping out of her way…

You can and should choose not to show your sister pictures of spiders, though. You can choose not to be cruel, and more than that, you can choose to be kind and understanding. People don't choose their feelings. If a person is afraid of spiders, or of men due to past sexual assault, or anything else, that isn't their fault. Of course we can't be expected to change the entire world to accomodate their feelings, but where we can do small things to help them, those things are good things.

So I claim the actual harm done is vastly overstated Some people experience feelings of discomfort, disgust, or even fear in response to particular stimuli that may seem disproportionate to others who do not share those feelings. This is particularly common and difficult for autistic people, who may struggle to adequately convey the fact that some seemingly innocuous situation like being in a noisy shop is distressing for them. So while it may seem strange to you that unsolicited dick pics cause…

Liberal has a few different meanings, and unfortunately one of those meanings is "the enemy" for many self-identified left-wing people. While the sidebar of this subreddit gives one definition of left winger, I imagine many people coming here haven't read it and would instead use their own. Stronger opposition to liberalism than opposition to the conservative right appears to me to be a strange quirk of the far left that I don't understand, and don't really approve of as a more centre-left minde…

At first, but increasingly I find that I am insufficiently surprised by it to find it frustrating. For years I was told that mens rights was all simply misogynistic nonsense, and I foolishly believed it. The sources that told me this also tended to make similarly blanket claims about conservatism. So I'm wary of falling into the same trap twice. This has little bearing on my desire to actually vote conservative, because Boris Johnson is more of a corrupt populist demagogue than a conservative, b…

I was wondering why so many vocal feminists seem to complain that men aren't "ambitious" enough. It makes sense that it's a code for wealth.

Parts of your post are incredibly similar to a link I came across recently that discusses dating experiences for men. The solution I saw offered to this dynamic elsewhere on reddit is that ambiguous social cues are a feature, not a bug for women. It allows them to filter out socially inept men from their dating pool. I'd love to hear some of your thoughts on this.

It's simple tribalism. I really believe it all boils down to who an individual considers to be part of their in-group vs their out-group. Tribalism is the root of all of it.

Call me a skeptic, but I don't believe that in the modern western world the majority of women would seriously consider a relationship with someone they know is a mass murderer. I'm all for keeping an open mind, but I think that suggestion is insane.

The poll does tell us that they have stopped being feminist because there is a separate option in the poll for those who haven't stopped being feminist: I identify as both a feminist and a male advocate which they would have selected instead unless they made a mistake and misread the poll.

Fair enough. Your words are going to be twisted regardless so you may as well simply state what you must in the most sound way. I think I'm too sensitive to do what you do. I don't cope very well with seeing my words twisted. Perhaps I'm too willing to give the benefit of the doubt to people and assume good faith. I really admire the effort you put into this.

They speak poorly but they bring up a good point: this message is offputting for the majority of people. It's popular here among the converted sure, but if the average user here were to take this message and share it with their friends and family, would they win them over? Doesn't tone matter if you want to win hearts and minds? Over my time here I've come to agree with much of what you've written here, but for a long time the stigma associated with this movement put me off from truly listening …

To be honest I have a lot of respect for someone willing to be straightforward like that. She can't choose how she feels, so it's better that she's upfront about it than try to hide it. She's not trying to mock or belittle others, she's just being honest about her own human selfishness. It's so much easier to deal with people like that than people who play mind games.

slower reflexes The paper you link appears to dispute that: The mean fastest reaction time recorded by men was significantly faster than women (p<0.001). At the 99.9% confidence level, neither men nor women can react in 100 ms, but they can react in as little as 109 ms and 121 ms, respectively. However, that sex difference in reaction time is likely an artifact caused by using the same force threshold in women as men, and it permits a woman to false start by up to 21 ms without penalty. We estim…

I don't entirely agree with you, but I am learning a lot here. Why is it that the menslib subreddit feels like I am not the target audience? Because it is not aimed at men like me. It appeals to feminine men and non-straight men and others like them, and the message of support they offer to those men does not help me. If there are men who find that helpful, then good for them. But I am not a feminine man. It's like you say, the image in this post feels emasculating to me. If other men feel diffe…
