It's contempt. Kind of like "How dare he look at me?". Unless you have something to offer which would quickly change to false flirtation, more smiles. i.e. Money, Power, Opportunity for her own advancement, etc.

On the note about college, I went to a fairly liberal college where I took this sociology class that seemed to make so much sense at the time but now I see it for what it actually was. Having never been exposed to topics like "gender constructs" and feminism I thought these words were law coming from the professor who herself was a lesbian and feminist. A good way to describe what you just said is to be intentional. I've found that my best days are when my thought process goes through the cycle you describe. Finding the joy in even the smallest things, like a good lunch, does wonders for esteem and happiness.
