I think this, in my experience, is where most "virgin" comments are coming from. They're not anti-virgin; they're jumping to a conclusion about someone who sounds like they're talking out their butt about women/relationships. I can see how that could be easily interpreted as virgin-shaming though. Maybe it is, though it's not as straight forward as hating virgins.

You get out of here with your reality! All sexism against women ended in 1919 exactly and now it's the men who suffer!

I think you know that my argument at that point was highly oversimplified, but I suppose I can't complain about being held to a high standard. I do think your first and third counter-points are highly subjective though. I'm not sure how I feel about #1--that's a very complicated thing to say. I feel like it's reasonable to say the things that affect my grandmother affect me, albeit less, but I've had many people in this thread tell me it's not so even when the affect is direct and measurable. That was my thinking after the first day or two, but I admit I find the level of toxicity here shocking and it doesn't seem to be worth the stress. I can advocate for equality without smashing my head against a brick wall. The good content of this sub is positively drowned out and there is just no changing that kind of groupthink.

I can advocate for equality without smashing my head against a brick wall. The good content of this sub is positively drowned out and there is just no changing that kind of groupthink. Look at the rest of this thread! People telling me the woman who raised me being denied an education and career had no affect on my life! Bananas.

I'm not talking about my great grandma; I'm talking about the woman who raised me being denied a college education, which would've lead to a higher paying job and all the benefits that go with that. I'm not talking about the pay; I'm talking about my life.

I appreciate not being banned (I'm banned from /r/feminism, ironically enough), but I had to unsub. I find the attitudes here really toxic. But I will always advocate for men's rights, just faaaar and away from this movement.

Of course things will change. I didn't miss that a lot of politicians are old; I'm the one being told that the past doesn't affect the present when, as you just said, the "past" still has the lions share of the political power. My grandmother being denied a college education directly affected me. It affects me today. My grandmother raised me. She could've made a lot more money with that education, for one.

There was no magical table-turning within the last 96 years where women are now the oppressors and men the oppressed. The US hasn't even had a woman as president for goodness sake. I would think having a significant amount of women in powerful government positions would be a bare minimum to think that is a reasonable thing to say.

How many conversations do I have to read and participate in before it's reasonable for me to form an opinion? Considering how much content in this sub is dedicated to anti-feminism, I don't think me becoming anti-MRA after going out of my way to learn about the MRM is unfair.

Ah, a Norwegian. That makes sense. You all seem to be miles ahead of the US on a lot of things.

I know I should be patient and kind in an attempt to find common ground, but I'm tired and this is ridiculous. Statements like that discredit the entire men's rights movement, which is a shame because it would be nice if there were more awareness for the issues men face. I joined this sub because I was appalled by how people talked about MRAs, but in the last few days the stereotypes have been confirmed over and over again. This sub is ridiculous. I know what he meant, but I appreciate the response anyway. The notion that female privilege "grossly" outweighs male privilege in a country (if you'll allow me to narrow it down to the US in particular) that has never had a female president, where females have only been able to vote for 96 years, where it's considered amazing progress that women make up 104 out of 535 members of congress, make up only 15% of CEOs, where my grandmother was forced out of college because "women don't belong here,"…

You're going to be hard pressed to show that a gender that hasn't even been able to vote for a full century yet has "grossly" more advantages than males. Women in most places were treated like property in a lot of places for centuries, and in a lot of countries still are, and you think male privilege dropped down below female privilege that drastically and that quickly? Regardless, I think we would do better to avoid trying to make it a competition and just focus on progress. This isn't the Oppr…

I haven't personally run into anyone who's told me that females don't have any kind of privilege, but you're definitely on point here--everyone has some kind of privilege. Some of it's forced in an attempt to make amends for past (and sometimes current) oppression, some of it isn't, but if people can't acknowledge that it exists at all then no progress can be made.

I've studied similar things in my classes and haven't experienced a "feminist outrcy" over it. I don't believe you, OP. This is a cheap (but successful) attempt at circlejerking.

I appreciate the thought, but I don't think we're yet on the same page. I'm unclear as to how targeting women because you believe they're more likely to react (or, as others have said, because it's easy) is unintentional or.circumstantial. I would liken it to a cop who targets blacks because they believe they're more likely to have something illegal on their person that they could be arrested for. Or the cops that arrest a man in a domestic dispute because they believe it's more likely that the …

The problem with your analogy is that one person is Chinese and the other is not. That's a fact. In our case, though, you are not more of a gamer than I am. Gaming doesn't belong to males.

What do you think sexism is if not "prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination on the basis of sex"? I think you should stop taking things out of context. I already explained why this is the case, and it's not because "hurr I hate womanz". It's because women react more to it. That is not sexism. It seems to me to be sexism by definition. It's treating women differently because of their sex, and you're using the stereotype of "women react more" to justify it. I find it really distressing that you…

I think we have a fundamental disagreement. I believe sexism doesn't cease to be sexism just because it's easy, while you believe it does. Though I think you should consider that you said "women get targeted above men" and "trolls don't discriminate" in the same breath. Does that seem reasonable to you? It doesn't to me. When all men want to do, as far as gaming goes, is play games. No one gives a shit. Move on. Play games. If you suck, you'll be called out on it. Deal with it. If you act like y…

It's definitely true that women are used to gentler treatment than men. For centuries we've been precious and protected, while men have been expected to be aggressive. I'm not here to say she's completely off base, but I want to point out two things I think she's failed to acknowledge: 1) The majority of harassment women who play video games experience is not in the form of trolling. I would say it's probable that the majority isn't even consciously malicious. 2) If a team is playing with a mic,…

Being that the things you're telling me conflict with my education and experience so far, I'm doing my best so sit here and do my own research because I wantto be open to your perspective, but I have to be honest and say I'm having a hard time accepting your claims. I will explain why and I hope you think I'm being fair. So far it seems to me that your view of mainstream feminism is similar to people believing Westboro (or worse) is mainstream Christianity, and that's very distressing. This is t…

I recognize that every group will have crazy people in it, but I will say that I haven't come across any feminists that subscribe to the notion that men are wicked oppressors and women are just innocent victims. You'll notice there's a thread TwoX about girls outperforming boys academically, and the top comment is "Clearly, something needs to be done to help boys the way something was done to help girls." The majority of the thread is people discussing how to help the boys because every feminist…

Okay, I sat down and read [this text] on it and am going to go with "no" for my official answer. Though I'd like to point out that the Wikipedia entry for patriarchy in feminist theory is states that the theory explicitly outlines that the "social system" is oppressive to both men and women, and this can be acted upon by either men or women, "whereas the earlier terms imply only men act as oppressors of women," which is a thing I think a lot of people don't acknowledge--that the theory is concer…

So, going back to my example, if there are five people, four sound like white males and one sounds like a woman, you believe they have an equal chance of being trolled? Though I'd like to note that most discrimination against femals is not in the form of trolling.

You're assuming this always happens in a game where someone is performing poorly. I think you'll be surprised to hear that it's mostly outside of actual gameplay, where level of competency isn't on the table. It also extends outside of gaming--if you read the experiences of people who've lived as both genders, they will consistently talk about their immediate surprise in the gender difference in this area. It's true that men are treated as disposable and women as precious, but the consequence of…

That's more than a simple yes or no question. I certainly wouldn't say women have no power, but if you look at the gender break up of powerful people there's clearly a wide gap, though I think it's closing at a reasonable pace.

Well, being honest, I know very little about that. I have been gifted games by my friends, and it's not because I'm a woman. I have gifted games to others, and it's not because they're whatever gender they are. I know my sister isn't good at being flirty, for what that's worth. You're right, I shouldn't have said that without knowing more about it other than literally "she has been gifted games." I'm not sure what my endgame is. My experience has just been so polar opposite of what yours has, I suppose. I've never received any preferential treatment/etc, just sexual harassment. And I don't mean just in-game trolling, which is easily dismissed. I'm also not sure how we can broaden our perspectives here. I can't think of a way for me to expose myself to more of what you're seeing--I certainly don't know how to get male players to give me preferential treatment. I've never seen it happen, m…

You do. I think you can appreciate how difficult it is to talk to people who disagree with you in a way that can't be interpreted as aggressive or defensive. I apologize if I'm failing. It is a reasonable belief that is held by many MRAs (who are often ex-feminists, it is incredibly common) that Feminists often don't seek gender equality, or fail to see that men are not on a pedestal that women simply need to be leveled up to. That hasn't been my experience at all. /u/Lauzon 's points had clear examples to support, however you chose to act condescending. I feel like you and I are reading different things entirely. Check out the statistics that matter I agree that being a man isn't all sunshine and privilege, but you have to recognize that you're making a value judgement here. If men are guilty for trying to be "dominant," women are guilty for rewarding such behaviour. I don't disagree at all. I don't think the notion that feminists blame men is as common as you think--women perpetuate these issues just as much as men do, and, in my experience, the vast majority are fully aware of this. I want you to look at this from my perspective for a minute. I'm a feminist and some guy is telling me, with zero citations, that "men are PROFOUNDLY more 'harassed and victimized' than women," that "MRA's actually have a balanced view of history," that feminists don't actually want equal treatment of the genders... and you expect me to be enlightened? What was your goal in posting that citationless diatribe? How do you expect a person who clearly already sees things very differently than you to…

I'm saying that's what your argument seems to be--as though your personal experience isn't subject to bias. I don't mean to accuse you of anything; I'm really just trying to point out that our experiences are different, and yours isn't more valid than mine or the many, many other women who report being targeted for harassment because of their gender. They want us to perceive women as "strong and empowerment" while simultaneously demanding that men "man up" and cater to their every need. I was open to hearing more on your perspective even though it seemed absurd to me, because I did come here to learn and I do recognize being male isn't living on some fluffy cloud of privilege, but this is where you lost me. I'm sorry, I can't take you seriously.

I don't disagree with the premise of your argument on complaining, but I do want to point out that the level of complaining and generalizing versus positive activism in this sub, I believe, plays a large part in why this sub has trouble being taken seriously. I'd like you to consider how often feminists are painted as "women who hate men" for similar reasons. Also, do you think that only 7% of women have the manly traits? I find it interesting that you seem to outright discount all the women who will say they're treated poorly in a game once it's found out they're a female in favor of your personal experience as someone who is decidedly non-female.

So if a team consists of five people--four males and one female--and the other team has a troll on it who's inevitably going to harass one person on that team, you believe each member of that team stand and equal chance of being targeted by that troll?

I appreciate this post. I joined this sub two days ago because, spending a lot of time in lady subreddits, the term "MRA" is not a positive term so I wanted to expose myself directly to the MRM and form my own opinion. Four is too young to be diagnosed with phimosis. Of course his foreskin isn't retractable; only 50% of boys have retractable foreskin by age 10. It's a BS diagnosis by a doctor who doesn't understand normal precpuce development in a society where it's normal to cut off a piece of a male's genitals as soon as he's born.

Do you feel that the harassment men are subjected to in games is equal to the harassment women are subjected to in games? Have you ever been specifically targeted for harassment because of your gender? My experience tells me no for the first question, and almost certainly no for the second, but I'd be interested to hear your experience. No one wants to be rejected, but no one wants to be expected to be passive. Nothing is stopping them from doing so? I don't think centuries of socialization isn't all that easy to over come. Facing rejection is the pitfall of being the active agent in socialization. Yes, rejection really sucks. Yes, it's nice to be pursued. That's part of my point--we need to get away from this mindset that women are "gatekeepers" and have all the power to reject or accept sexual advances, and that they're a slu…

I'm not sure I would call being expected to passively wait to be pursued, or being expected to hold back on your sexual desires or risk being called a slut "all the power." Certainly there's some kind of power in that, but I think you're also overestimating how easy it is for a woman to get a man for sex or otherwise. There certainly is a different "landscape for sex" (I like that phrasing for some reason), but I don't agree that there must always be a difference because biology dictates such a …

It's not the individual's preference that's the problem, it's the reflection of a pattern in society of praising men for their serial prowess but shaming women. You're right, there's nothing wrong with not being attracted to promiscuous people, but I think you do yourself a disservice if you don't also acknowledge the existing disparity in how the genders are treated in regards to sexual expression.
