So if you approached a girl, how would you start the conversation? In my case, the girl was walking towards me and I think I rushed it because I felt that she'd walk away if I didn't say something fast enough.

yeah, I got really panicked and kinda blurted something out impulsively :( . If a girl is walking, how would I get her to stop and talk to me? I think I was rushing because I thought she'd walk away from me. How would I deal with that?

If a girl is boring, just walk away. Find someone else that's fun to talk to. Don't force yourself to be with someone you don't like, even if they're really hot.

I think it's clear she wasn't/isn't interested. No ambiguity here.

I've tried doing this, but the struggle is more of what happens when I'm in a conversation with more than 1 person. Like let's say I'm in a group and I'm talking to Person A 1-on-1, and its going great, but then Person B decides to join the conversation. It'll eventually end up becoming a conversation between Person A and Person B, with me watching them. Regardless of the setting, I have an easy time talking to people 1-on-1. It's when there's more than 1 person involved in the conversation that…

Yeah, that's definitely it. I think that's a great idea, I don't really contribute much when I'm in meetings at work or when I'm taking classes, so I guess I'll start there. And you're like the 4th person this week to recommend joining Toastmasters! It's definitely something I'm planning on doing. Thanks for your input!

Yeah, that's a great idea! Based on what a couple of other people said also, I think if I force myself to be a little out there from the very beginning, it'll help me throughout the rest of the conversation. You've given me a lot of great insight, thank you!

I've always found 1-on-1 easier because you can solely focus on that one person. I find that's it's a lot easier to escalate the intimacy with the other person because there's no judgment or intervention from an individual that might be part of the group but not part of the conversation. So be free, embrace the intimacy that comes with being in a 1-on-1 and you'll see an amazing amount of success.

Honestly, the moment a 3rd person is introduced, I just start to fade away. Sometimes that internal switch feels so drastic that I become conscious about it and end up feeling worse. I definitely am in groups a lot at work, but socially it's rare because I don't really have a big social circle. Maybe like 4 or 5 close friends at most. And my friends aren't friends with each other so it's harder to find opportunities to be in group settings. I think the idea of trying to look a bit off is where I…

Yeah, I feel that I'm putting more pressure on myself in groups to look cool and say something cool, even though I never have this problem when I'm by myself or with one other person. Do you have any ideas on what I can do (any sort of mental preparation) to get rid of that pressure?

Yeah, as I mentioned to SmoothPrimal, I never thought about walking away from the group. I really like how you use the group more as a "home base" rather than stick to it at all times. I feel like you're exactly the type of person I want to be. I'm not really interested in being the centre of attention, but I still want that presence regardless of the situation I'm in. You've given me a really great perspective, thank you!

Haha, I never really thought about walking away from the group, I guess I always felt that'd be really rude. You made a great point though, I should definitely place more emphasis on trying to have as much fun as I can. Thanks!

I'm definitely trying to! As I mentioned in the post, I tend to blank out a lot in groups, are you saying that's also because of a lack of experience being in them or do you think there might be any other factors? Sometimes I feel as though I put a lot of pressure on myself to say something cool when I'm in a group, and then end up not having anything to say.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
