It's not just harder in a new city. Ever heard of the Seattle Freeze? People in the northwest are generally nice and very polite, but not necessarily friendly at all. Don't let it stop you from anything though.

Once knew an acquaintance who had really strong game even though he was missing a hand. I know the disability isn't the same, but my point is that even with a disability he had better game and more confidence than the average person and having to overcome the disability just made him seem more impressive.
