I think the cause of the spending gap is the stereotyping of gifts based on sex. Men get tools and golf clubs and women get jewelry and clothing. Jewelry is generally more expensive than tools and golf clubs. It's not because women are more valuable, it's because of the stereotypes dictating what both sexes will find useful/enjoyable.
