Is the Wall Street Journal editorial page a credible opinion source? Yes. Take it on the word of this anonymous reddit comment.

An ideological bias towards a group that represents about 30% of the US population? Ruling on issues like a woman's bodily rights or citizens' access to birth control on religious, rather than constitutional lines? And all nine of them are "evolutionists". The researchers, from Johns Hopkins University, found circumcision reduced the risk of herpes by 25%, and human papillomavirus (HPV) by a third. HPV causes cervical cancer in women, and genital warts in both sexes. Circumcision rates have been declining in the US and are lowest among black and Hispanic patients - the groups with the highest rates of HIV, herpes and cervical cancer. The problem with science it doesn't respect anyone's sacred cows. Anti-circumcision redditors need the equivalent o…

It really made me sad to read this. My university also had a great deal of discrimination against men in terms of curriculum and courses offered in the humanities.

They take a pretty neutral stand, advocating parental choice, which is fairly reasonable in this case. Nowhere on that document did the terms "unmutilated" or "unclean" come up. As for the colorblindness question, I guess it comes down to how much of a utilitarian you are. I'm sure Peter Singer would be for it. For my own view, I don't think it would be that good of a trade for extremely rare diseases. For a global killer closing in on the Black Death in kills, and which is rapidly mutating, it …

I don't mean to ignore the other side of the debate. It may not make you feel any better, but circumcision also has a long documented (at least back to the beginning of the 1900's) protective effect against syphilis and other STDs. Obviously, condoms and someday a successful vaccine are key. can you give me back my foreskin? Well... this might be up your alley. To really do it right, though, it would probably take some cutting edge treatments involving stem-cells. Edit: Wow, an informative, help…

If you must know, my step father is Kenyan, and he and my mother are both MDs who have done infectious disease in Africa. That's why I have an interest in this topic. I find your personal attacks extremely offensive and revolting. To be honest, I'm about done with this sort of online "community".

I looked at your links. Some of those pages linked to other pages with some level of authority. The problem with an activist site is that of selective evidence. Conservapedia's page on evolution also links to peer-reviewed information, but does so in a very selective way and does not even remotely represent the mainstream opinion. Much the same with single issue sites focused on abortion, gun control, religion or in this case, circumcision. Some references are meaningless. Heh, yeah, yours. Why …

Some references are meaningless. You've found a few fringe activist sites dedicated to preventing circumcision that supports your argument. The UN AIDS group and the World Health Organization say something very, very different: http://www.unaids.org/en/PolicyAndPractice/Prevention/MaleCircumcision/default.asp http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6502855.stm I'm sure this comment will get a bunch of knee-jerk downmods, but the fact remains that the medical community, and the body of peer reviewed re…

I'm pretty sure you mean neonatal unless they hack open the mother! Yeah. As for the research, it's not all 3rd world. Studies have been done in dozens of countries, including Canada, and the female to male transmission rate is cut by about 70% while the male to female is cut by about 40%. The UN AIDS group promotes it for this reason. http://www.unaids.org/en/PolicyAndPractice/Prevention/MaleCircumcision/default.asp The WHO also supports circumcision to prevent the spread of HIV. http://news.bb…

Unmodified, natural, and unaltered all sound fairly descriptive without being offensive.

And you're trying to misuse that power in yet a different matter. Circumcision is no more mutilation than ear piercing is. Furthermore, it's been done safely at least since Egyptian times, and been associated with significantly lower risk for a large varieties of infections and even cancer. Calling it "unmutilated" is just as repugnant as calling it "unclean". It's just an ideological position that attacks a different group of people.

I have multiple (half) uncles and aunts who are younger than I am. Apparently, my gradfather's "biological clock" ticks at a slower rate than any woman's on the planet

Sexism is alive and well. It's just directed at guys now.

False accusations like that can and often do ruin a man's life. I believe her crime should be punished with the prison sentence she nearly gave him, and her name should go on a sex offender registry. Perhaps her prison sentence could be halved for her guilty plea.

Surely you can see that it's a different standard that men and women are held to. It's one thing to make a point of taking a day after pill after an unplanned sexual encounter. It's quite another to expect someone to never have one. that accidental pregnancy thing pisses me off. It isn't an accident if you got drunk at a party and screwed without a condom, that's just being stupid. Maybe you've never gotten carried away in the heat of the moment and had unprotected sex. The vast majority of peop…

A woman can still change her mind having sex. A guy can't.

You wouldn't hold women to that standard.

What this really shows is that our justice system is doing a poor job. If people really were held "innocent until proven guilty", false accusations would be much less dangerous. As it is, many, many innocent men have been imprisoned on nothing more than a single woman willing to lie on the stand.

Have more male teachers. Focus less on literary/emotional analysis and let students chose science fiction and non-fiction books if they want. Allow some competition in the classroom. In short, teach things boys are interested in. Calvin said it best: “Calvin, why don’t you do better in school? I know you’re smart enough. For example, you already know the names of every dinosaur there ever was, how to spell their names, now to pronounce them -- which even I have trouble with. You even know their …

Nice way to go off on a tangent and run with it. My point should have been clear: there's a double standard.

If they replaced that commercial with people of different races, would you assume that they're implying racism? Or atheists being duped by a Christian? I don't think they intended to say men are dumb. It's just a funny commercial. Well, how would people react to a "funny" commercial in which a white person outsmarts multiple black people?

I'm kind of surprised by the fierceness of the complaints at this post. I've always been a little annoyed at how acceptable female on male violence is. I can't even count the number of times I've seen men beat up by women in movies, commercials and television. Worse, they did a study while I was in college in which they had a "couple" arguing in a public space. Then they had one start hitting the other. The whole thing was staged to see how passerby reacted. When it was the guy hitting the girl,…
