The problem with your first assertion is that the mother putting the name of a man on a birth certificate is not challenged and some of the time is not known to the man being named. In those cases is only revealed when DHS comes calling for their check. Dealing with DHS is a complete shit show, not speaking from personal experience, but that of a friend. It should be paid by the state. If the state is going to take the mother's word and just enforce child support on whomever she tells them the father is, it needs to be confirmed.

It's not even close to a waste of money to be sure you aren't being tricked into raising someone else's child. The test should be done before the birth though.

Having been the BP in the position you're talking about, don't get discouraged. You can give that advice without alienating them.
