In Colorado there is a watermark where the child support calculation changes and it's based on the number of overnights each parent has with the kids. (Here's a quick link, not sure how old that doc is because I had a lawyer to walk me through everything). This site also has some more information. Source: Am a father in Colorado with 50/50 custody who pays $450/mo in child support plus alimony because I make way more than my ex.

My other question is of course once this child is here what to do. I know that the court systems have a propensity to give custody and everything (often unfairly) to the mother and I do not want that at all. I want to be 100% fair and 100% equal and make this work for him, for me and most importantly for the baby. If you are involved in this child's life in a full-on shared parenting role from the get-go, you will never have to pay child support, whether you are in a relationship/living with with the mother or not - the split/percentage of care is how they figure it, here in Australia. Call CSA and ask them, they will be very helpful and are for the most part pretty decent to deal with if you're not trying to be dodgy. This isn't necessarily true in the US.
