I don't have a specific source, I just know that Freud's theory that women want to have sex with their fathers (which predated the Oedipal theory) stemmed from the fact that after he reported that many young girls reported being sexually abused by their fathers. However, once society at large became aware of the literature, it was heavily criticized as being inappropriate and abominable. That's why he re-ammended it so as to suggest these women were merely fantasizing about sex with their father…

Well, an increase in REPORTED sex crimes... For example, incest (father/daughter rape) was common in Victorian Europe, but because sex was not talked about, this abuse went under the radar and was a problem left untreated for a long time.

This could just be a correlation... Countries that are more open about sexuality and its discourse are also more likely to talk about sex crimes, and to make them illegal.

I really resonated with this. I thought it was a thoughtful and well articulated article, one that would do both women and men good if women were to read it and think through it.

They allied themselves with feminists because feminists supported their struggle, as they had had their own. Remember, at one point, feminism was a necessary trend to give both genders respect, social justice, and equal opportunities. That persecution was largely at the hands of men... And now, as men crusading for the rights of men, we must throw our support behind our fellow men.

You're right in that men typically don't report due to lack of support and the threat of ridicule. And I'm not saying they should be ignored--sexual violence goes both way. And while men victimized by women aren't a negligible minority, they are still a minority. It's much more common, when men are assaulted, for the perpetrator to be male. I've worked with male survivors, and can attest to the trauma of being assaulted by a female (or male). I'm not making light of your grievances. What I find …

You're taking this a little too far... And I don't have the answers. I'm just lamenting the sad fact that trials for sexual assault and rape rarely end in conviction. There's no need to be so accusatory. And to speak to my problem with the consent defense being used so frequently, I've worked with a lot of survivors of assault who have had to deal with so many negative societal attitudes just for being brave enough to come forward. To then actually have the DA decide that there is enough evidenc…

While this is horrible, this is one case, and a sensationalized one at that. There really is no such thing as guilty until proven innocent in rape cases: in fact, the majority of cases, even with strong evidence, end in the men going free. Even having a so-called rape kit performed only proves that sex occurred--which leads to accusations of the rape being consensual as one of the primary forms of defense. It essentially becomes her word verses his, and that's even in the best case (when DNA evi…
