If somebody posted a link on MR saying "hey MRAs, you say that you care about women too... put your money where your mouth is and donate to (some women's shelter)", it probably wouldn't go very well either

Having gone through the Ontario secondary school system, there is no way that this would be mandatory based on the types of courses that are mandatory right now.

This has been a big news item in Canada. Essentially a girl killed herself and her mom claims that she was raped 2 years ago and bullied with the pictures of it. There is a picture of the 4 supposed rapists floating around and this guy is one of them. There is no public evidence of anything. While understand that the mom and the community are sad due to the suicide, it is very irresponsible to go about things like this. There is a witchhunt for these boys some of whom may be innocent. It could t…

I know it is a frustrating situation for you and there is sexism involved, but it has some merit. If females do better in getting tips (some of which the management gets) and customers, then that makes them better at the job. That is, money is the ultimate performance assessment, and if a polite, hard-working male brings in less than a absent-minded hottie, then the latter is better for business. You said as much with your anecdote. Females might have an unfair advantage, but such is life. It is…

Toronto is not the problem. It's universities' student unions are. But their shittiness extends across the country.

Or pregnancy, if it was rape. Which he would be on the hook for.

What's pretty ironic is that the main "justification" for the rapist was that she felt entitled to it because she had done something for him before. Hmm. Sounds sort of like the entitlement that feminists are so (rightly) against when it comes to men (e.g. you owe me sex for dinner/doing something for you etc.)

It does matter. There is a vast difference between comments (inappropriate but maybe not illegal), touching (bad) and full on rape (really, really bad). I disagree with the notion of lumping them all together into one term. One reason why is the connotation it has. When people hear the term, they will probably associate it with one of them specific types (i.e. hear sexual assault and think rape or hear it and think just touching) and will do so consistently. This is problematic because people ma…

Didn't read the article, but I don't think its appropriate to talk about somebody being "the best looking X" in a professional setting. If somebody said that about me at work, I'd feel a bit uncomfortable.

If i was a woman it would have been rape 10/10 times. To be clear, it was rape. That doesn't change due to the fact that others don't seem to acknowledge that .

Men are stronger than women, often by a fair margin. And that should be the reason that women don't hit men.

I disagree with your tl;dr. The statement "if a woman is raped" and "we need to teach boys not to rape" do not logically imply that only women/men comprise those groups, respectively. If I say "if an American is obese, it is because they eat poorly and/or do not exercise. We need to teach American's that these are important", does this mean I am saying only American's are fat? No, it means I'm talking about American obesity. Similarly, this person is talking about man on woman rape. The fact is …

Good. That said I understand its the child's body but that's my flesh & blood that i sacrificed my body to grow inside me. This is pretty scary reasoning. It is essentially "it's my baby that I had to bear and birth, so his well-being is less important than my wishes".

It would be better to say it is not only directed at women. One issue I have with this subreddit, is that people jump from one extreme to the other. Many seem to think because men victimization is overlooked/ignored and women's is overhyped, so to speak, that we should do the opposite and talk only of men's and ignore women's. The view we should have is to realize that anybody, regardless of sex, age, race etc. can be a victim of violence, rape etc .

Why does the presence / non-presence of other ads change whether or not this is okay? Look, I definitely understand the notion that the discussion on domestic abuse is skewed. However, it doesn't make sense to say "because male victims are not properly being noticed or helped, it is wrong to help female victims." Again, the ad is not saying all men are abusers (in fact it's saying just the opposite that it is one in five). And its not saying only men are abusers. All it is saying is "There exist…

There is nothing wrong with genderizing it and saying "some men are abusers" especially when the ad in question is offering male-only support/counselling. The ad is not saying only men are abusers or that men are not victims.

I don't have an issue with this. Some men are abusive and it stems from issues that can be solved. There is nothing wrong with trying to get people to change. Would you have an issue if this were about gambling or drug addictions? It's true that men are victims of abuse too in high numbers. But it doesn't mean that women aren't of that no men are abusers. We have to be careful to not go from on extreme (all victims are women) to another (no men are guilty ) The issue that I have seen is when the…

Not really. There are three cases: there is evidence of rape -> rapist goes to jail there is no evidence of rape -> nobody goes to jail there is evidence of a false rape claim -> false accuser goes to jail Your scenario would fall into the 2nd one. False accusers would only go to jail if it could be proven that they lied.

I think this is one issue that both feminists and MRAs can agree on: most organized religion is full of sexism and gender roles that are bad for society.

Men are more violent than women, in most cases. Abuse isn't limited to emotional manipulation. Physical and sexual abuse are the tools in every man's arsenal. Men will defensively seek to attack a woman that has offended him. It's nice that someone with an education can be objective about the situation and not cater to one gender. Now think about how stupid that sounds.
/r/MensRights06/03/13 11:10 PM

Sorry, in what context is "abuse" only referring to sexual abuse? I think your assumption is not justified. These girls probably believe women cannot be abusive in general (physical, emotional).

IMHO, one of the things that would help get the word out and get people to take it more seriously, is to try to get people to see how such a thing they could happen. So it would be helpful if you could explain (in general terms - coercion, drugs, force) what happened.

When you then assume that everyone over 20 is more or less sexually educated, and that teen pregnancies are only a miniscule fraction of all pregnancies, you can pretty safely assume that almost all of those 30-40% (i.e. unwanted pregnancies not attributable to contraception failure) are deliberate accidents with plausible deniability. Ugh what a disgusting leap in logic. You sound like one of those feminists who knows what conclusion they want and do mental somersaults to get there. First, your…

I once asked a few women (not feminists per se but sort of) if they thought men and women were equal. They said yes. I then asked why there should be separate events in Olympics/sports. Some answered that "I guess we're not equal, never thought of that" . One tried to say "we're equal but different." Cognitive dissonance at its finest.

This is great example of Poe's Law "Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of fundamentalism that someone won't mistake for the real thing." And subsequently, the real thing can often seem like a parody.

A study shows that both genders think that female/female conflict is more damaging in the long term. Instead of questioning why this might be, such as people having real-life experience that indicates this, the immediate and only analysis is that people have sexist views on the matter. There is absolutely no scientific basis to say whether this perception is grounded in truth, so to claim it is not is simply ridiculous. As if the study's author going down this path isn't bad enough, CBC (the new…

| "I guess I never thought of that." He said. I think this sums up MR in a nutshell. Yes there are feminists who are vehemently against it or people who have a self-interest in the way things are. But for the most part, people simply haven't thought about situations that are sexist towards men. That's why it is my belief that one of the best ways to spread MR is to simply get people to start thinking about things and asking question. Much like religion or other ubiquitous movements, things will …

We need to be careful not to think everything is sexist. It could be laziness, an honest mistake etc. If you do say something, give them the benefit of the doubt - "I noticed there was only a sign on the women's bathroom - thought I'd let you know in case there was an oversight" - as opposed to accusing them of sexism (and even if this was the case they have plausible deniability)

I think your quote about "fertile ground" is good, but so is his response. Feminism fought for some necessary and good things in this area: women being comfortable and able to report rapes, men who raped to be punished harshly, victims to be protected throughout the process etc. However, this then snowballed and went too far to the point that accusers were too protected and the accused were not treated fairly. His point is valid in some sense. Suppose MRA's got our wish and accused men were anon…

So many red flags. She is verbally abusive by telling you what words you can use and that your opinions and views are wrong. She is jealous/paranoid about you cheating/leaving her You work a lot, she stays at home and looks for jobs but doesn't do much around the house. You know, every time I read a "horror story" on MR about a divorce or break-up, I think to myself that there must have been some warning signs. Well these are yours.

I am over the simplistic idea that women are raped by heteronormative, hegemonic patriarchies instead of by criminals. My favourite one. If feminists realized this they would see how stupid 'don't rape' campaigns are, as they would be the same as 'don't steal' campaigns.

I don't understand what you're saying... she is pretty much re-stating "the golden rule" - treat others as you wish to be treated. If you're a douchebag, people will be a douchebag to you. We're not talking about people being a douchbag towards you for no reason.

Almost every adult man walking around spent at least part of his adolescence dealing with sourceless, purposeless anger and a desire for violent catharsis. I have never experienced anything like this in my life and I'm well past adolescence.

I think that "ladies" and "gentlemen" are being used to refer to the notion of a polite, generally respectable person and not specific gender roles. So, no, I don't think it is sexist. It's essentially saying "If women were polite and respectful, would more men feel challenged to be polite and respectful".

Eight C: Because people always insist that circumcision isn’t equivalent to female genital mutilation (which may or may not be true), but then proceed to say circumcision is no different than an ear piercing. In fact, many people see the ear piercing as being worse (there was a post about this before). Just think about that for a second. Great list, but I have a few suggestions: 17 should be two separate ones as they are probably two of the biggest issues there are (literally life and death). 15…

My two cents: you are of course welcome and many of the issues straight men face, you face too (there are some such as sexist divorce laws that may not). That said, there is some truth to say that men's rights isn't about lgbt issues. That's not to say we personally are against them or are for them. It's simply not what our fight is about. Same with racism or corporatism or gun issues or whatever else. These are important issues that we all personally have strong views on, but unlike feminism we…

Actually its a good thing to say that its awesome or deserves a medal. This implies it something that is appreciated as an act of great kindness, not something that is expected or deserved. And as men while we shouldn't feel obliged to be nice to women, we should want to be nice to people. The only problematic comments are the ones saying that it should be expected/a given.
