Which should not take very long. The victim's family and the citizens who's community has been disrupted deserve to see justice. Justice delayed is not justice. Punishment and eradication of a public threat should happen within 30 days of the court proceedings.

Edit: My wife, for example, is a college Professor who teaches medieval literature, Latin, Old English, Writing, etc. etc. She doesn't know how to operate the thermostat to turn on the heat in our house.
