Take your children to your local Department of Motor Vehicles (US) and get them each a state issued non-drivers ID. Photo, birthdate, name, address. I was questioned at the US/Canada border while taking the kids on a day trip to Toronto to visit the science museum in 2000. "Are these your children? Can you provide proof?" After producing the ID's from my wallet, we were allowed to pass without any further delays. I can only imagine what might have happened had I not had them.
