The only juvi we had, I believe, was upstate and it had a limited number of cells to hold juvenile offenders from all over the state. For a while we did have a boot camp run by the local PD. I, thankfully, never had to go through it. It was intense from what I saw. I'd be up at 7am and I'd see groups of kids returning from a run carrying a large log. The town I went to school in (USA) had a school shooting in which a teenaged boy shot and killed a teenage girl. He was sentenced to juvi until his 18th birthday, upon which the conviction would be sealed and he would basically have no criminal record. From my experience, juvi cases are handled relatively evenly with deference given to the fact that they are minors versus whether they are male or female.
