Obviously, this is a more formal thing, hanging out with friends and deciding to get lunch is different than arranging an outing. Or their games are just generally better than the alternatives. The same rehashes are made because they are popular. Many indy games break away from popular mainstream tropes and do well, but most don't see the same success as a yearly rehash because those yearly rehashes have been tailored to appeal to the biggest segment of the market without doing anything bad enough to turn gamers away.
