It's pure counter-narrative but unfortunately, while establishment power is such that it can/will only address things through this lens, we're forced to play the game to some extent as well, even if all we achieve is showing people how stupid the rules are. I agree with you that it sucks but - to coin a phrase - you might not believe in identity politics, but identity politics believes in you.

Pure anecdote but my mother is STILL technically thousands behind on child support (I'm almost 30) to my father. I do wonder sometimes if the difference in enforcement is due to how few fathers really, seriously chase that child support cash compared to mothers. My father and I were dirt poor (not "can I really afford this new TV?" poor, but "We can have somewhere to live OR we can eat this week" poor) when I was growing up and could have really used the cash, but my father was proud and didn't …

It's the result of a number of years of gradual narrative building by the "feminist celebs" in the media (ie. the faces of the movement) and the seeds sown by social sciences ideologues in academia that are lately bearing fruit. What used to be a term to describe - as you say - social stereotypes men were pressured by society to conform to has degenerated into just another example of weaponised jargon used by feminists to reinforce traditionalist male hyperagency ("IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT, MEN!!!!")

Like what? It's an opinion. I find the performing of unnecessary cosmetic medical procedures on children too young to understand the consequences to be unethical whether it is genital mutilation or HRT on the basis of a prepubescent kid saying "I wanna be a girl!" Happy to be convinced otherwise.

Sorry babe, but you're inferring way more than is actually written. Maybe you should think about why that makes you so defensive? Finally your whole thread seems to be nothing but baseless fear mongering and arguing from ignorance about a tiny insignificant group and discrediting some trans-people's identity. If someone's "identity" can be "discredited" by somebody posting on a small corner of the internet that some activism seems dodgy, then it's not really much of an identity is it? What is it…

Yeah, I have heard of it being done that young and while I don't think it's a big deal to allow a child to explore it through clothing or behaviour (I suspect many would "grow out of it" if allowed to play out naturally), my opinion on surgery or hormone treatment at those ages is that it is child abuse and no ethical physician should be facilitating it. Like lots of young gay guys I went through some very confusing times when I was hitting puberty about sex and gender. I am honestly frightened …

No, I agree and I'm not really forming a conclusion, just trying to make sense of what I'm seeing. And I can't believe it's coincidence that many of these young people who declare they are actually transwomen or what have you then go on to become frothing 3rd wavers and then decide later on that they are "lesbian" or pansexual but mostly like girls. Just seems a little too smooth to me.

Just to be clear - I'm not saying TRANS DON'T REAL or anything - I think it's a legit medical condition and I'm happy to leave treatment options up to professionals. If your doctor/psych thinks transition is the best way to treat it, then great. But not I'm really talking about that, I'm more looking at "transtrenders" and people taking drastic action and making permanent changes to their bodies because they've been taught to hate their own gender and end up being exploited by some asshole onlin…

I've seen some of the "misogynist" comments that occasionally get pointed out to me. Some really are what I'd call woman-hating; caustic and vicious. They usually get downvoted hard and challenged pretty quick. But so many comments that get the label seem... I dunno, pretty innocuous really. No worse than the shit that young women I've known say to each other in public about particular men or men in general.

I don't get this argument that we must only help male victims if we can find a way to do so without upsetting the feminist lobby. Because the feminist lobby is incredibly powerful and has amazing PR. All those young feminist women who've been getting communications and marketing degrees for 30 years? This is what they are doing now. It also helps that they have some really low-level psychological biases to exploit. Woman upset?! Better fucking do something!

You're not the only one, at least as far as politically active feminists go. There are people who take the label "feminist" without really knowing about the history or the modern rhetoric because, like, equality is good and stuff? Hell, I was one of those (male) feminists up until a couple of years ago! You could be right that it's just further along the same process, but I'm not totally convinced of that. Japan has cultural issues with women being discouraged from continuing to work after marriage, much moreso than in the West, to the point where I've heard stories of newly married women being quietly let go from their jobs for that reason alone. It's not seemly to have married women working for you. That wouldn't be all bad necessarily, but the economy there is stagnant and has been for years…

The gender dynamic and social problems in Japan are quite different to what we have in the West. There are some superficial similarities but I would be wary of lumping Japan in as a "western" nation and drawing any meaningful parallels. Sarkeesian(?) was right when she said that feminism doesn't exist in Japan. But they certainly have a set of problems of their own.

It really is a testament to the incredible social power feminism has (really via the innate social power of women generally), as well as it's amazing PR campaign that gay men aren't the vanguard of the men's movement. Gay men are men, they love men and they are regularly used and abused by feminists for political gain and have been for decades. Yet STILL most are willing to kiss the ring. I really hope that what we're seeing is the beginning of the end of that. If the hate keeps becoming more an…

And still the proposed cause is "crisis of masculinity" and because men can't/won't "talk about their feelings" (ie. act more feminine). Why is it that nobody wants to address this problem with the understanding that men are different from women and the approaches that work with women don't necessarily work with men? Nobody wants to actually tackle it from a male perspective or offer solutions that might work in that context. It always seem to come down to masculinity/maleness being treated like…

Turnbull is seen as "progressive", at least in comparison to the rest of his party (the Liberal party are our bog standard conservative party for those not familiar with AU politics) and especially compared to his immediate predecessor. This is probably just the opening salvo of a campaign to tarnish that reputation among the electorate. Get ready for more of this all the way through to polling day. I find the issues that the MRM seeks to address have more relevance to me as a gay man than the "gay rights" movement at this point. That is for a combination of reasons, the most prominent being (IMO) that gay rights has been a huge success and achieved many/most of its goals in most English-speaking western countries and that it now is largely subservient to other major political ideologies which sours it somewhat. My personal feeling is that what social issues I still face day-to-day are more…

From the comments: What men tend to do is not deflect but offer support in a non-intrusive manner. Men will just be there for their friend, when he's ready to face the world again, he'll find us down the pub ready to give him some cameraderie to rejoin living again. Until then, stay clear and let him sort it out himself, that's what men do. Assuming all the usual caveats about this not necessarily applying to everybody... I worked a very taxing physical labour job in that and much hotter (up to 45C) with longer between breaks for a number of years. I've noticed this as well. In my experience it's seen as a kind of trump card to be played when a gay man starts showing signs of disenchantment with feminism. It's certainly happened to me personally and a few friends of mine. It's taken as a given that if you're a homosexual man, you MUST support feminism because they see feminism and gay rights as synonymous. This seems largely to be because the feminist movement expended significant social capital in the past attempting - and mostly succeedi…

This is definitely a factor. Trans men generally pass 100% of the time after... IDK, 1-3 years. Trans women may never pass, because estrogen does not counteract all of the changes that testosterone causes. For sure. One of my acquaintances was a "late bloomer" as a male and begun transition in her late teens. So even before she began HRT, she presented as quite androgynous. The result is that she now presents as very feminine (and is gorgeous to boot) and passes very easily. Whilst she is sensit…

Teach women to exercise their vag muscles regularly and size becomes much less of an issue. SheForHe

I'm pretty sure Anna Cherry gives no fucks if men enjoy looking at her body and "objectifying" her, given what she does for a living (and how enthusiastic she is about showing off even outside of her job). When I think of "empowered, independent women", I think of the Anna, Alison, Karen and the other badgers.

I wish this wasn't as lame as you make it sound, but this is entirely accurate.

Women marrying men on the assumption that they can "fix" them and then being unhappy when the guy doesn't want to be fixed is a time honoured tradition.

Wow. That article reads like an angst ridden Facebook post from a 14 year old girl.

Sounds like she may actually have a good bead of what modern feminism is actually about and has decided not to partake. Fair enough, really.

Holding men accountable? For what? If a man wants to play video games, look at porn, hold down a job that's enough to keep him comfortable and enjoy his life the way he wants, what is exactly is he to be held accountable for? And by whom? Why is it that "men" are expected to be all ambition and drive and dive head first into the cesspool of the social and financial rat race lest they be labeled "man children" or whatever new pejorative people come up with to shame them into conforming? Why is th…

I actually think being a gay man has made it easier for my straight male friends to be more affectionate and physically close over the years. Keeping in mind that I'm now 28 and I've largely surrounded myself with "modern" people of my generation may give you an idea of my particular social circles (and YMMV). While despite being thoroughly modern fellows these guys otherwise demonstrate the typical male distance with friends. I think in some way my being openly gay has seemed to give these guys…

From now on, I will only scowl at women and let doors shut in their faces instead of holding them open. Let them call me sexist now! Men, I will continue to smile at as it seems appropriate and hold doors for them if I get there first.

I believe this is already the case here in Australia. IIRC, "de facto" spousal relationships can begin in as short a time as 6 months cohabitation as far as the government is concerned. When push comes to shove, de facto relationships are, I believe, treated as marriage when it comes to division of assets etc. if one party wants to take it to court. The requirements for proof of co-ownership might (I hope) be higher, but I've had a uncle cleaned out by his ex even though they were never formally…

Guys, I'm just not that into music by blondes anymore. There's only so long that I can listen to the same old blonde feelings by some lyrically challenged light-haired dullards. You should try making a playlist with only ginger artists. You get such a breadth of feeling you'll never go back trust me.

Being called a "heterophobe" for simply preferring the company of men (as friends and as romantic/sexual partners) by a hardcore campus feminist I know was one of the things that started me questioning whether I should continue to claim the "feminist" label. That and being shouted down for questioning the dogma of Patriarchy and rape culture and expressing sympathy for straight guys and the shit they have to deal with. There almost seems to be a attitude developing in some third wave circles tha…

I don't get it. I bring some guy home, he wants to have sex. I consent on the condition that he takes me out for Mexican food afterwards. He agrees and we have sex. Mutual consent throughout the encounter is not in doubt. Once we're done, I go into the bathroom to clean up. While I'm there, he puts his clothes on and dashes out the front door without a word. I don't get my enchilada. Is my consent now retroactively withdrawn/void? Have I just been raped?
