I, too, confuse attempts to correct injustice with sexual harassment because I'm a puling, privileged infant.

Feminist theory says (and was the first to say) the gender of a parent has fuckall to do with their ability to be the better parent, which is an argument against women getting default custody of children in divorces, an implication of which is that fewer men would be required to pay child support because more men would get custody of children in divorces. Show a little gratitude, say "thank you, feminism!" Even if, like a petulant child, you don't, don't worry; feminism will still be arguing you…

You're extending my analogy into a similarity I'm not claiming. Right, but your analogy failed to capture the reality of the MRM in relation to feminism. It's true that you could address men's gender issues separate from feminism without being antagonistic toward it (although the why would be lost on me), but that just doesn't describe how the MRM functions.
/r/MensRights09/05/13 04:36 PM

I view the MRM as being similar to those complaining sharecroppers. Most people here aren't saying that we should readopt a Traditionalist model just because gender equality has had some negative results. How I read this forum specifically, most people are saying that we're not done with correcting gender inequality and that some of the changes that have been made have resulted in new problems that also need to be addressed. Yeah, the problem with your analogy is that the MRM generally blames fe…

No, and no it doesn't. I'm pointing out how, much like the gradual shifting of gender roles has so far shifted the burden of household responsibilities from being entirely on the woman to only the majority on the woman and some now on the man, the civil rights movement shifted some of the burden of institutionalized racism off of non-whites at the expense of some white privilege. The common theme here is 'correcting unjust inequality,' and to complain about the former is to complain about the la…

Oh, so if you have percentages you must have done an exact count of how many of each type of post there was. Since my impression of the thread differs greatly from yours, why don't you go ahead and share those numbers, plus the upvote numbers each category received? Also I'm sure you excluded those posts that were made after the mod post was made about it being a troll.

Clearly, but only if you ignore the overwhelming number of comments where the poster appears to have fallen for it, and those comments where posters are arguing with people expressing skepticism, and of course all the upvotes the aforementioned comments recieved... ...so basically if you ignore the vast majority of the comments on the thread, yes the attitude is trust but verify.

We're talking past each other; you're hung up on definitions and analytics, I'm talking about the goals of feminism. If you really think that feminism is so disparate that gender equality is not one of it's major aims (if not its only aim) then you really don't know the first thing about feminism. I would tell you to read the book I linked but it's pretty clear you aren't interested in actually learning something, so yeah. I'm acting in no such way. One can indeed google "feminism" and get an idea of what it's all about. The conclusion is that it's about a great many things depending on which feminist you pick out of the search listings. Feminism addresses a variety of topics, but all of those topics are addressed in a way that relates to gender inequality. You're just being disingenuous here. So if I were to call myself an "LGBT rights activist" and argue against gay marriage, would the term expand to include "th…

This story is only relevant to gender inequality discussions if boys were harmed by this disproportionate to the rate at which they appeared in front of the judge compared to girls. For example, if the population of juveniles the judge saw was 50/50 boys/girls and boys made up 70% of those harmed by this program, then yes, that's an example of gender inequality. However, that statistic is currently not known.

You made a claim that certain feminists who adhere to a version of feminism different to your own are "people who call themselves feminists." I'm not aware of any standard and accepted manifesto of feminism which would make their views non-feminist and yours feminist. There is no "manifesto," but that doesn't mean people can't take a survey of the feminist project and pick out a common theme or themes. As it turns out they have ( Chodorow, Nancy (1989). Feminism and Psychoanalytic Theory. New Ha…

So what makes your version of feminism "right" and "competent" and other people's version of feminism "wrong" and "incompetant"? The problem is, the term has no strict definition which enshrines the ideas you've assigned to it. They have just as much right to define the term as you do. This can be turned around on you. The MRM has a pretty disparate collection of viewpoints. Say a group identifying with the MRM comes out saying that men ought to dominate women, that they ought to have sexual acc…

Drunk sex is rape. Rough sex and BDSM especially set some kind of guidelines for indicating when one or another partner is doing something non-consensual, usually in the form of a safeword. Rough sex/BDSM that doesn't have clear guidelines for consent often crosses the line into rape. If your partner doesn't seem to be enjoying the sex, it is your responsibility as a person ostensibly interested in not committing rape to make sure you have consent for whatever act you are performing at the time.…

I'm not going to mindread, I'm not going to look for "physical cues" and shit. I'm fucking, not evaluating. He's clearly prioritizing sex over watching for signs that he's doing something his partner doesn't want. That's not a strawman, that's literally the thing he said.

"Hey man stop trying to control my sex life, I'm gonna have sex with her even if she says no!" Yeah I'm trying to control people's sex lives to make sure they don't rape, I'm pretty ok with that. I also noticed you didn't actually argue the point, probably because you know I'm right.

I would tell both they're doing incompetent feminism. Also I think it's worth noting the author of the second article you linked isn't saying what you think she's saying. She's not claiming men's rights issues don't exist; rather, she's claiming men's rights issues exist, but the men's rights movement incorrectly blames feminism or female privilege in general as their cause while they ignore the actual causes. Pretty big difference!

Hey yeah let me just go ahead and choose 3 publications that support my argument (and only actually provide one) from the thousands that constitute the body of scholarly feminist work and present them as if they comprise a thorough meta-analysis of contemporary feminist discourse, let me just do that. Feminism conceptualizes the gender inequalities that are the focus of the MRM as the result of harmful male gender norms that are constituent of the greater system of harmful gender norms called patriarchy. Feminists both on reddit and generally hold this view. This is not a matter of opinion, you're just plain wrong. Deal with it.
/r/MensRights03/05/13 05:15 PM

Well, you think wrong. Some radical feminists have their toe in the water of misandry, but the vast vast vast mainstream majority treats men and women's issues equally. MR is opposed to feminism generally. It's dumb.
/r/MensRights03/05/13 03:49 PM
-19

You were both wrong; feminism aims to combat gender norms that are harmful to both men and women, full stop. MR aims, generally, to combat feminism, under the (incorrect) assumption that combating feminism will combat gender norms that are harmful to men. Experts on both movements generally agree that MR is reactionary to feminism in a way that is counterproductive to their own interests.

What needs a citation is your claim that the dismantling of the patriarchy combats these harmful roles. ...holy shit. To your first point, the only end of allowing men to exercise privilege over women is to allow them to exercise a disproportionate influence over society. I asked what you to define patriarchy because every feminist has a slightly different idea of what it is, and what you related is virtually the exact same thing as I said, the only difference being is that you are talking about the forces which cause a patriarchy to exist, while I'm talking about what a patriarchy means, namely, a disproportio…

haaaa, no, by patriarchy I do not mean "the existence of a disproportionate number of men in power," and already I can see you have a strawman conception of feminism. The core idea of patriarchy is that it is a system of socially constructed gender norms that seeks to privilege men over women, despite the fact that it does not always succeed in doing so. A disproportionate number of men in power is a symptom of patriarchy, not the disease itself. As far as MRA only criticizing the Dworkins and S…

MRA efforts are meaningless because instead of correctly identifying patriarchy as the source of those (few) gender inequalities and norms that harm men, MRA identifies feminism as the source of these inequalities and norms, and attempts to combat feminism instead of patriarchy. Ironically (or perhaps not) this ends up hurting men even more, as well as women. MRA efforts are devoid of content because there is no MRA issue that feminism does not address more accurately and effectively. Again, thi…

Many philosophers argue that there are such things as moral rights (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_and_legal_rights), but that's a massive derail that I'm not interested in pursuing. You're claiming that the state is imposing a burden on a person's labor when they assign them responsibility for paying child support (which I will refer to from now on as 'the debt'), but there are two counterexamples to this claim. First, if this claim were true then a person who normally does not work, but …

I don't care why or why not abortion is legal, I care why or why not it's morally permissible. Big difference. Anyway, it's not clear that the financial responsibility of child support is an imposition on your labor. If that were true, then failure to pay would result in the obligated party being sent to a forced work camp until they pay the debt. Clearly this is not the case. Sometimes people are imprisoned for failure to pay; but I consider imprisonment for failure to pay child support unjust,…

No, elective abortion is an exercise of bodily autonomy because nobody, not even a fetus, has the right to use your body without your consent. Men would have the same right to abort if they could get pregnant, so this is not female privilege. Think Better.
