This worked for me. Read Bruce Lee books, make him your Uncle Bruce. Read Stoicism books. Meditate. Go to a Boxing gym and learn to Box. Take that shit out on the pads. Looks like you have discipline sorted so everything above will come easier. Oh and get comfortable with telling assholes to get fucked to their face. Have fun.

With regards to "it still kinda hits my face" Your gloves should be touching your face, there should be no space between glove and face. If there's space, that's when the blocked punch will still hit your face.

Moving backwards isn't the only defensive action you can do, are you pivoting on your lead foot and rotating left or right to face opponent side on then throwing a jab or straight? When you say your leaving your face open for a strike, are you keeping your chin tucked and the other hand protecting your face?
