Nah, better to sit under a tree and reach nirvana.

It’s because people cannot distinguish between fantasy and reality. In their imagination, it should be a great thing to be seen as attractive or sexually “successful” and with how men are treated as having their worth tied to their success with women. In reality, sexual abuse is horrific and one of the most traumatizing and psychologically harmful things that could ever happen to you. It’s a failure to recognize consent as being imperative and not admitting that someone who is statutorily raped …

What’s frustrating is that it actually is a good model, it’s just pointlessly gendered.

If that's the case then why ... Because it's only my opinion (and yours) that both these types of surveys are improper. The political majority decides based on if the outcome is favorable for them. Testing to see who makes better doctors, lawyers, politicians, or teachers in a battle of the sexes is going to be inherently subjective and have so many unknowns as to be totally useless. A study that compares men and women should concern health outcomes or at least consider biological differences be…

If the results sound like contest results rather than a discovery then it's not real science. Especially if you can't answer either of these "why" questions: Why is this research being conducted Why is this result being observed Just because you can measure something doesn't mean that there is a scientific purpose in doing so. I can think of multiple dubious/unethical experiments in genetics and biology in the past decade that actually create a danger to humans. Cooking up fake social studies ex…

Almost like we shouldn't be funneling money into answering questions that aren't beneficial to ask in the first place. Whether men or women are better in any of these situations isn't really relevant to anyone and if it were significant than it wouldn't take significant deep research to uncover. It's just stirring the pot and like you said there is a culturally "correct" answer which is offensive to science to begin with.

Take your tradcon values and shove it. You can go back to the kitchen and cook for someone who doesn't know how to change their oil instead of pestering me.

I am a man and I will tell you that I don't advocate people do their own auto maintenance outside of learning how to do it for all the reasons I just told you. It's not faster or cheaper when a full service oil change is $25 and an oil filter is $10 and 4 quarts of oil is $20. Factoring in the trip to Autozone and disposing of the oil you're already taking up more of your time. Now you should regularly rotate your tires and I would never tell anyone that it's a valuable experience to do that you…

You really are a power tool. It’s quicker to do car maintenance as a mechanic at an auto shop. By doing it at home you aren’t saving yourself money or saving anyone time. But if you want to rotate the tires on a minivan with one jack in the middle of the road to be a man then knock yourself out.
/r/PurplePillDebate17/11/20 08:04 PM

Dude, my mechanic is five minutes away and takes care of my fluids and tire rotation in 30 minutes. I don't have blocks. I'm not staining my driveway with spilled oil. I can walk next door to Great American Bagel while they're smoothing my ride or like I said before, I can even write software in their damn lobby. Fuck off. Unless you think that changing oil pays more than managing servers take your head out of your ass. Shove it up there with some air tools too buddy.

My dad is all about option C to the point where every moment of time growing up he spent working on the house or the cars or on a new project. I decided then that I would rather pay to have things fixed and enjoy my time. Sure, I can change the oil on my car, fill up the tires and rotate them. But it's going to take me twice as long and cost the same as taking it in. I'm not going to buy a new appliance when it breaks, but I'm also going to limit how much time I look into fixing it. Good point. Regardless, there have been peaks and we are in a drought. Without looking at gender, I have seen a lot of intelligent people uninterested in computer science and recent initiatives to spark interest with things like robotics camps, multimedia programming, classes running at libraries, etc. have shown some promise. I agree that painting a picture of one gender as inherently weaker or less resilient is destructive in the long term. Which is also why I think it's important to mention t…

That's the kind of question that these groups try to answer. Historically there have been more women in computer science. The problem, if you see it as one, is clearly a social one and I don't see why organizing groups in a social way is not the best solution.

I don't think this hurts men because this isn't diverting investment away from them. Boys have been signing up for coding classes and computer science programs all on their own. What's problematic is when things are a zero sum game, where both genders are in equal need of a resource which is distributed unfairly. It can also be wrong when unnecessary action is taken, like the total amount of scholarships assigned to women-only when they make the majority of college graduates by a real margin. So…

I agree and I think that many commenters here lack appropriate context. To clarify, I do think the university has taken the correct steps - the club charter was most likely illegal. But bringing women into computer science is a worthwhile endeavor. First of all, no one knows why girls are not interested in computer science. The number of women graduates with CS degrees peaked at 36% and then cratered. See this article. Historically, women have made some groundbreaking achievements in the field a…

Look I understand your argument, but if I mention the deficit in blacks and Hispanics in computer science as well I would expect support for this being an issue here. Personal bias, but I believe that computer science is an innovative field with a lot of upward mobility compared to nursing. I don't think there is any innate reason why women would participate less to such a degree outside of social reasons e.g. stereotypes, lack of encouragement, role models, mentorship, etc. I personally believe…

None of the groups are exclusive, it's just their focal point. You can legally have a group that's named 'Caucasians Who Code' if it is not restricted to whites only. It's only public opinion that's against you. This is supposed to be left wing discussion so I don't know why it's controversial to say that we can organize to elevate the standing of different minority groups. I think you’re right. And when you add that any person should be able to join either group that’s also in line with the rules. That way each group can have it’s own agenda, no one would be excluded, and people could develop positive relationships within their gender.

I don’t disagree but using cannibals as an example is a bit off-putting. I think your conclusion that many problems stem from men not caring about their fellow men is spot on.

Woah there, seems like you went off the rails. It looks like you're looking for an immediate solution that respects everyone's autonomy, so then legalizing prostitution I guess? But I'm actually promoting something different. In comparison with the previous sexual liberation movement, what changed was social tolerances to allow people to engage in sex outside of marriage. So what social tolerances could change that would increase the participation rate for men in the sexual marketplace? I think …

I definitely think that dating norms should be more equal. It gives me a bit of whiplash getting told off for holding the door for a woman, being expected to offer to split the bill, and then to actually pay for it myself. In terms of some of the issues you mentioned before, do you think that women's satisfaction with sex is something more of a her problem? I'm on the same page with you. I think these are some common ideas that most men would agree with, whether left wing or more conservative: Equality over parenting and reproductive rights. We are currently subsidizing habits that erode families and the unbalanced nature of the laws and courts leaves men bitter over relationships and marriage. Reducing the focus on sex in our society. Eliminating the stigma around virginity. These cultural pressures lead to frustration for men who need to obsess a…

> The problem is trying to control others' consensual sex. I think you're looking at things backwards when you say that. Cultural and societal norms have always regulated who can have sex. Our current norms are 'do whatever you want' which is why you say we can't control what people like to do consensually. We got to where we are through a sexual liberation movement. Given how many men are involuntarily celibate I think you could argue that a male sexual liberation movement would aim to resolve …

There's a counterpoint though. Usually in the animal kingdom the males are the brightly colored and flashy ones. So the fact that women put so much time and effort into their appearance must mean something. I feel like part of the problem is caused by our cultural attitudes which currently place disproportionate pressure on men. I don't believe that this has always been as huge of a problem as it is today.

Such men always have and probably always will be cast out of the reproductive game. Females at the lower tier will either engage in a kind of serial polygamy with higher value men, or opt out of mating rather than reproducing with the lowest tier men. And this might be for the best--sexual selection of some kind is needed in the species, after all, to counter dysgenic tendencies. This would make sense if birth control weren't a thing but it is. Not to mention that the genes that sexually attract…

Ha, yes since I can sway all of the mainstream media and all of social media, I’ll get right on spreading the message that men are valuable to society in and of themselves no matter what they’ve heard growing up or see every day. You realize that there are multiple overlapping movements targeting men as the blame for everyone’s problems and if you bring up our higher suicide rate, the response is that women make more attempts. It’s a shit show.

Those men currently on the outside would become highly suspicious by instinct about women, because they go into bed easily, women would also loose any mystery or allure. I think they would come to despise and become disgusted with women; there are some parts of the Matrix some people aren't supposed to see. Obviously this is conjecture but I feel the opposite honestly. Our cultural gender relations are so stunted. It's worse than a junior high dance. If men and women really met as equals in the …

I think the question is, why shouldn't dating be easy? The standards for courtship have changed dramatically in the past hundred years and in the past decades. We collectively set the rules with the popular attitudes and beliefs. To center on males in particular, there have been prominent sex positive movements for women because that was an issue that mattered. If a large number of men are struggling with relationships and this is an issue that matters, why shouldn't we champion it? And that's t…

I find the first point the most compelling. Women's and feminist movements are increasingly about calls for men to use strength and stoicism to support women who are depicted as being weak, vulnerable victims. This is a modern form of chivalry and just a repeated gender trope. The feminist movement was supposed to be at least in part about liberating men and women from restrictive gender roles, so this is obviously counter productive.

You don't seem very progressive minded and I think this debate has really come to an end. Instead of thinking of “dating” as a game with a prize of getting laid, why don’t you consider the full landscape of marriage, family, companionship, and relationships. Men’s complaints of dating trouble is a symptom of underlying problems in our social fabric. I’m not arguing for going back to anything, I’m arguing about going forwards to something. Moving forwards to what? I can think of a few norms that could change. Men are expected to be the initiator and pursuer and they are expected to be…

This ignores the momentous overhaul that has happened in modern courtship over the past few decades and doesn’t offer any introspection into the cause and effect of those changes. This isn’t an “it is what it is” situation or a “take it or leave it” or something that can’t be discussed because it makes women feel uncomfortable. We don’t have dowrys or arranged marriages in western countries. We don’t have strong family values either. Feminism and hedonism are the closest things to a moral framew…

Like if you were a teenager finding it difficult and a women said "hey you are right and I empathize with you but nothing is going to change" would that really be a satisfying solution to you? Yes, it is definitely a satisfying solution to me. The current social climate adds insult to injury.

If we don’t acknowledge people’s struggles it creates conflict and resentment. Telling people to get over it is not empathetic or productive. And while dating is not a right, the desire for companionship is an innate drive and a very important part of being human. It is a social issue. Beyond that there are studies that show that being single is detrimental to men’s mental and emotional health so this could clearly be identified as a men’s issue.

To be fair, feminism does fight against this bigotry Big doubt from me here. I think as it is today feminism is the leading proponent of the idea of female victim hood which is really regressive. Normalize women taking a more active role in the dating scene, including asking men out, paying for dates (even more than splitting the bill), making marriage proposals. I don't necessarily agree. I think TRP is slightly opinionated about what are reasonable goals. For instance, the desire to marry and pair-bond with someone despite the overwhelming evidence that you'll be exploited and dumped. You're not going to get any advice here for writing love letters that make you look beta if that's what you really want to do. There's one glaring problem with this angle. Bill Gates could have been the lowest SOI, neurotic, nebbish, teetotalling dweeb and once he's the richest man in the world he wouldn't have a problem finding a date. This is not helpful reasoning, although it's not inherently wrong. Who was responsible for the bias in 1908? Gender roles are still a structural problem, and blaming toxic masculinity, feminism, men collectively, or women collectively doesn't get to the root of the problem. It's probably the same force that's resisting change and equality that drive us to be divisive instead of inclusive on these issues. We need to create a positive narrative somehow to draw people into this cause.

Let’s say that all of the richest corporations in the world are controlled by men. What does that mean for the other 99.99% of men? Absolutely nothing. Even if all positions of power of all time were held by men, that says something about those seats, not about the gender. I mean, under the feminist patriarchy theory that men control everything, men were the ones who changed laws to allow women to vote and opened other doors. So in terms of reciprocity, I think men do deserve something from women in reaching gender equality. Especially if women are involved in policing gender roles and setting the cultural narrative. Unless of course women are inherently selfish, then there would be no reason for them to work for true gender equality rather than simply advancing w…

I've seen that before and that leisure statistic is idiotic to me. The chart literally shows that the men are putting in more hours of work when combining work inside and outside of the home in all situations. The fact that they exercise more leisure time? Isn't that like complaining that other people are out having fun while you choose to stay home? Or are men exploiting women by running off to play golf while they sit at home (and watch Netflix). What are the missing hours, sleeping? Literally…

Twenty minutes ago you didn't even know that over 2500 men are raped every week in the United States. In fact this source, which was just the very first result I found, shows the difference in 2015 was on the order of 3x not 10x. And many legal definitions of rape do not consider anything other than penetration to be rape, so these men were not actually "raped" that were made to penetrate women. I think this is a perfectly valid hill to die on. You seem to be dismissing this issue in the same wa…

I don't think you have to go that far for the comparison to work. If you don't see your purpose in life to be raising many, many children, then by historical standards you ought not to have a lot of sex. Our society isn't family friendly. To the extent that it is, it's designed for a family with two and a half kids. Yet everything revolves directly or indirectly around sex. It's unhealthy how much the two concepts have diverged. Sex is just masturbation at this point. Not that I think everyone s…

I think there are a lot of holes in the idea that society is or has been completely controlled by a patriarchy. If you do a cross-section of a society and find that 100% of the political, religious, and business leaders are men, I don't think that implies that men have absolute control of that society. Each of those men are, as individuals, more powerful than the average individual, but they are not more powerful than the entire society as a whole. And it so happens that half of the society is m…

Oh boy, if you're afraid for your safety during sex then that's a much bigger problem. If you do feel safe - then I bet there are a lot of ways for women to participate in sex and work for their own pleasure without being confrontational. There seems to be a cultural norm than men are responsible for women's pleasure in bed and I don't think that's productive, considering everybody should be able to orgasm on their own and know what gets them off. Animals have an evolutionary drive to further their genes, and the best way to do that is to pair up with a winner. Since part of having your genes continue is not just survival, but also mating success, having success with mating makes you a better pick. This applies to females selecting mates when they are biologically limited in the number of mates they can have, where males aren't. So, it's human nature.

As long as they're correlated, then it does indicate that. When the correlation doesn't exist then you can't use it as an indicator. It's a heuristic, it doesn't have to be "right" to be accurate or save time, which as long as they are correlated, it does both. Those examples are cherry picked and examples of things that would obviously diverge with more data. If these studies can continue to be replicated, then those are not issues here.

Yeah, I think that's a stretch. When dads are changing as many diapers, making meals, and are actively involved in their kids lives, there is no reason that a mother would be a better parent overall just because she had heavy doses of oxytocin in the first six months of breastfeeding. There's a cultural myth that mothers are more important than fathers. It's best if a child has two parents, and if they only have one there is no benefit of one over the other besides at an individual level.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates15/07/20 08:32 AM

I'll concede those points but it's not a slam dunk in favor of marriage. My parents are still going strong after over 35 years and it's one of the highlights of my life. But I won't be deluded into thinking that's how the world is, what other people have grown up with, or something that I'll have easily in my life.

I don't find those facts to be rebuttals. The need for breast milk during the first years and a statistical preference for one parent when upset is not really sufficient basis for awarding mothers more parenting time than fathers throughout 18 years, all things being equal.

While some outlooks might be bad for a relationship, there is no "true effort" that will prevent a lot of bad outcomes. Maybe TRP disagrees but there is literally nothing you can do to stop someone from cheating on you. There is both no way to know if someone will and also no way to prevent it. About 25% of people engage in one or more emotional or physical affairs in their lifetime and so about half of all long-term relationships have infidelity. The only way to reduce the odds is to be a faith…

The marriage rate in the US is actually the lowest in history: source. The yearly divorce rate is slightly lower in recent history: source. It's still true that 40-50% of marriages end in divorce. You can take your own guess at how many of the remaining couples are happy in their marriage.

I like some of the ideas that they have, but it is definitely an overly simplistic model to just compare life expectancy, high school graduation, and a happiness survey as the only inputs. The fact that it says Saudi Arabia is better for women than men is a red flag here. Not to mention, women have extremely high masculine gender role standards that we have to pass to even get a chance to date her. So everything is clouded by judgement of the man and how he "performs" the mating ritual. The end result is men are not incentivized by women into taking risks that go against the strict masculine gender roles and norms that women expect out of men. So there exists a deep divide between men and women for anything other sex and personal relationships between individuals…

You're putting words in my mouth. The fact is the social contract of dating makes men responsible for making a date entertaining and that is what the majority of people believe. If you disagree with that, then you should think about what it would be like if women were fully responsible for planning dates. And, if a man gets a cold-fish woman on a date it isn't a guaranteed loss which you've seen to make it. Men have less opportunities than women, so they can't afford to be highly selective. You …

I was operating under the assumption that people were engaging in conscious thought and decisions for reproducing but let’s go with the biological argument. What you’re describing is an evolutionary stable strategy. However, the consequences of evolutionary stable outcomes are not always beneficial for a species. The majority of speci…

Well, they decided to eliminate male thirst by outlawing all the triggers, including making women walk around covered in tarps and making the display of long hair a death crime.
