It's literally a karma farming sub.. the posts are clickbait with leading questions like "my male friend says men are better than women and therefore get paid more - how can I argue against this?" And they lose their shit and get even more angry at these imaginary men..

Yeh they call it "the manosphere" and labelled it toxic masculinity..

The descent of man by greyson perry is a good book to read. Personally I think we are at a point where we need to redefine masculinity for ourselves. Its not about how you dress or how you look, some guys just arent like that and it doesnt make them any less masculine. Most of the standard "man" stuff has nothing to do with masculinity.. its just marketing. We dont have to do it in advance either. Men can just start recognising and looking after their own needs more and encouraging others to do …

there is no denying you can't afford to some extent, be boring, vanilla or ''straight-edge'' anymore as a guy, meaning you have to really spice up your profile as a man within mainstream society, you cannot be basic and generic anymore, you really have to stand out No you don't. It's straight up ridiculous. Who is making you do this? How do you propose to control your 'profile'? or do you just mean your personality?

This is largely unsubstantiated and unreferenced facts and figures and sarcastic captions, with some quotes potentially taken out of context. Whether true or not its basicaly useless unless you're preaching to the converted.

I think most common tropes are damaging and male culture is nevertheless constantly changing. Imo mens social habits still have a way to go, but things are going the right way slowly. At 40 I'm now starting to think that the huge inertia behind changing social norms is the reason these things take time. Some men will never change, they'll just die at some point and people with more current thinking will become the majority and bring a tipping point, or just continue the slow progression. A lot o…

You mean 'we'? Who is this other 'left' you talk about? It's you and your mates surely?

Are you reading fed up as effed up? Also not to try to shit on your advice but this is largely dancing around "be fit, be good looking, be confident". If you're a gym bro, you may feel in-tune with your masculine core, but I have no idea what that means tbh. Make yourself happy and healthy for you is the bits I agree with and don't worry about what anyone thinks. I would say op definitely shouldn't go spouting controversial shit or stepping on people's toes without apologising.

Same dude.. some private counselling and learning to express my feelings better, plus fairly regular meditation attempts did it for me.. I found someone who was cheap enough for me to have a few sessions and it really helped.. Also a lot of work on myself since has given me a bit more confidence in myself. I still get angry beyond the ability to calm down but at least I'm not taking it out on those around me. I have also found since then that I'm ADHD and mood extremes are probably a symptom. Th…

You don't need a rebuttal, just tell them you're sorry they feel that way and tell them you disagree. Then continue to model the behaviour that men need. Check up on your friends, be open and empathetic, and openly distance yourself from toxic people that think men are bad by definition.

Masculinity is literally intrinsic to men. its the definition that is the problem. Masculinity is not about eating habits or any of that superficial crap. Its about doing what you want to do in a way that is respectful to others needs and conscious and protective of your needs as a man, and generally as a human being like you. That is true alpha male shit. Am drunk and recently broken up for good reasons. look after your mates..

it seems totally benign to me from what you have posted but context and missing info is probably key here. He was polite but apparently didnt understand why you were upset by his warning that you might get your item confiscated. I dont either tbh. It seems like a nice thing to warn you of. Then he blocked you when you started making accusations. Not casting any judgement but its not particularly clear what has happened.

I define patriarchy as a system of male-dominance. That isn't the accepted definition of "patriarchy", which is authority through male lineage. "Patriarchy theory" is different again, and as far as I understand it, boils down to undervaluing traditionally feminine behaviours through inherant bias in our political and economic systems. It does not necessarily therefore benefit all men. Under this definition it actually impacts the majority of men (those who do not conform to solely masculine beha…

Feminism is an ideology, while men's rights is not Potato potato.. most feminists would disagree with you. feminism is not particularly clearly defined as an ideology either. Generalizations hurt every movements' credibility.

These go back across like 10 years and there isnt even any recent ones.. there is no "backlash" unless you go looking hard for it and blow it out of proportion.

current backlash about female criminals being in prison in the UK? There isn't one.. not a peep on the news.

Its pretty naïve to imagine that most feminists talking about the wage gap are not every bit as aware of the factors influencing lifetime earnings as mens rights campaigners, it's not that complicated. Arguing semantics is literally just a fugazi obscuring discussion around real issues that affect men. Its also pretty stupid to imagine that there is people spouting off about "patriachy theory" who have not read anything on the subject tbh but sure go off.

Feminism, radical feminism, seems to me to be getting more and more powerful. roe vs wade is massive and effectively allows the government to interfere with everyones basic bodily autonomy. Time to forget any bullshit differences with female rights campaigners and get on the streets.. this is the time. radical feminism may be well publicised, but realistically its a neglible percentage of feminists. A large part of the feminist movement supports mens rights, indirectly if not openly.

This is a stupid take. Being left wing is a political opinion, and quite subjective depending on where you are. "The left" is not a virulently anti-male movement by any definition. There aren't even "Left" spaces. Its all just people. You seem to fall into the same problematic "us vs them" thinking as those you describe as persecuting you. Go talk to a counsellor, stop reading the news, its largely bullshit anyway. Go talk to some actual people.

I get it, the fallacy is to point to the statistic as evidence of a patriarchy. Thanks for the explanation.

Aren't most CEOs guys though? It's not a hasty generalisation to say that. Its not proof of a patriarchy either, depending on your definition. The same system that causes the earning gap between women and men causes a lot of the problems men face though imo.. the fallacy is seeing it as an us vs them situation.

Treating people with respect is not the same as a personal respect for someone. The phrase has become bastardised to "respect women" rather than "treat women with respect". I've personally never heard of it refer to women, just elders, but either way it's just manners really to be taught to children. Imo you should treat everyone with respect. It doesn't prevent you from maintaining your boundaries regardless. Correct people on it if it bothers you that much..

Everyone wants companionship at least on terms they are comfortable with. A lot of people want children, for which a relationship is usually preferred. It's kind of ridiculous to think otherwise given the reality.

You misunderstand the problem, there will always be illegal abortions because they are needed for basic economic and health reasons that trump the legal ramifications. To say there will always be circumcision performed on infants for the same reason is just wrong. Making the procedure illegal to perform on infants would have far fewer negative ramifications for people's quality of life, beyond religious based preferences, or for society in general.

The problem is that a lot of self proclaimed feminists don't agree with the more extreme opinions of the rest and actually support a lot of the men's rights we fight for. Its unnecessarily polarising to just lump in all women identifying as feminists imo.. solidarity is needed to enact serious change and men's rights needs allies.. toxic gender stereotypes are enforced by both sexes.

He's suggesting that women think all forms of masculinity are toxic. That is pretty disingenuous even though there are probably women who believe that. He's also making it harder to talk about the actual issues by polarising it and making it about some imaginary masculine tendancy to be violent. This guy is worse for men's rights than a lot of feminists imo.

How then are feminists not incredibly guilty of taking part in these pressures by making it men's job to fix everything bad in the world? They are! The ones that believe that anyway.. there's plenty of men who take on the mental mantle of being solely protector and provider and scorn others for not doing so.. I don't think it's helpful to frame it as us Vs them though personally.. There's enough disagreement among feminists for it not to be a universal view. It should be just sensible people Vs …

Yeh tbh I don't think it's an easy one to solve. I just think that renaming it won't make it any clearer..
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates13/03/22 10:50 AM

It's not a clear problem.. personally I wouldn't even consider toxic masculinity to be necessarily anti-social, because it is the sum result of societal "norms", whether faulty or otherwise. Violence is generally the point at which it is considered to become anti-social but there are a whole lot of unhealthy behaviours and beliefs behind that, that are totally supported by society (i.e. phrases like "man up"..)
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates13/03/22 10:20 AM

It depends how you look at it and what aspect of the problem you are talking about. it's gender inequality and prejudice at its root really. More specifically I would describe it as behaviours driven and reinforced by toxic and mistaken attitudes towards gender roles on a societal basis. If you are talking specifically about the behaviours of men as a result of this I would say toxic masculinity is an apt description. Toxic femininity is the opposite side of the same coin..
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates13/03/22 09:38 AM

Fair enough.. and I agree. I just think the name will remain even if the problem becomes known as "toxic gender roles" or something.. it will still be defined as something that leads to both toxic masculinity and toxic femininity.

No but to be honest that kind of argument is the same kind of problem.. you will get people disagreeing with it on principle whether they agree with the concept or not. The phrase doesn't carry the same weight that the n word does by any stretch of the imagination. It's a bit trite to compare the two tbh.

I agree its a bit of a problem phrase. But I would say creating a better understanding of the problem is easier than renaming it..
