I probably would've been taken aback by his abrasiveness too. That's a pretty unexpected comment while you're troubleshooting technical problems. "Someone piss in your cornflakes?" would've worked fine as long as you clearly communicated it as light-hearted banter. Perhaps even laugh at your own joke, since you don't have other subcommunication (body language, smiling etc.) to illustrate the humour. Anything confrontational might backfire due to the informal setting and his existing social proof…

If you're not inherently intelligent, why bother reading? If you're not inherently a good athlete, why bother training? If you're not inherently handsome, why get a haircut? Even if we accept your assumption that personalities are set in stone and we'll always have to fake other traits... surely you can see the value in making the absolute best of a suboptimal situation?

I really like "The Dismissal" for social network interactions. Brushing their comment off lightly (or even just ignoring it) conveys that they're more invested in online discussion than you, which typically has a negative stigma. Depends on the case, though, and it's not so radically different from in-person power plays that I think you would need a completely different toolbox.

Yeah, the context definitely matters. :) I'm talking about legitimate attempts at a power play, not mere banter with your mates. As far as "overthinking" goes... well, relevant social savvy doesn't come naturally to a lot of people, myself included. Some will benefit from this kind of deconstruction, while others will benefit most just from getting out of their head. (As I aulluded to near the end.)

I think "no" would be perfectly reasonable unless the email was incredibly urgent and he didn't have a phone / computer nearby to do it himself. It's your property which might contain private info or messages - absolutely acceptable to have boundaries on who touches it. It'd generally be my preferred response. That said, it could open you up to further power plays if he's deliberately trying to put you down - e.g. trying to frame you as weirdly uncooperative since it's just a harmless email... I…

Depends on how you deliver the "If you say so". :) It always acts as a "nothing statement" for me.

I don't go to book club, or work at a restaurant... they're just hypotheticals. :) Playing a social videogame (like Super Smash) at a house party doesn't even strike me as weird, though...? Depends on the type of people there, I guess.

You can also build rapport with others at the same time. While a jerk is being particularly obnoxious, see if someone else (that you're on decent terms with) is paying attention to that jerk. Make strong eye contact with that person, then shoot a quick sideways glance at the jerk, then back to strong eye contact with a faint smile. If done right, it communicates a shared feeling of "what the hell's up with that guy?" and you've got another thing in common with them. (Which you can talk about whe…

"I see" is a great line! Reminds me of "If you say so"...

Great response. Fundamentally, power plays are a battle of 'frame'. It doesn't particularly matter which one you adopt as long as it's stronger than theirs.

Hey mate, thanks for the feedback! I'm definitely one of those people who never really 'got' social dynamics, and had to teach myself. (Definitely still in the process of learning, which is why I'm slightly hesitant to write a lot on the subject!) Glad I could provide some value to this subreddit! Jack

By "I found this article interesting" do you mean "I wrote it and am advertising my site"?

Recommended reading: Death in the Afternoon - Ernest Hemingway Watch for his description of the odor of courage. (I will not tell you the page, so you might skip to it.) It fits.
