Would someone be able to explain or give an example of a healthy traditional/non-egalitarian marriage? I'm having a hard time understanding boundaries, specifically what I should expect from him and how to differentiate between normal expectations and entitlement.

I love him and he's a good husband. I usually like his personality too. I don't want to leave or get divorced, so there's no point in complaining. I'd like a little more freedom and at least one activity (outside his family) but I'm not getting anywhere talking about it. So it's probably best to accept it and try harder to be happy.

This is who he is. If you want to stay married to this man, then forget teaching dance or taking barre class. If you want to teach dance, then you cannot stay married to this man. You're right. I knew he was kind of controlling before we got married. I think I underestimated the effect it would have on me and haven't adjusted well. I know I need to stop drinking and sleeping during the day. I'm going to try harder to find things within the family to fill my time and put more effort into being ha…

He made you scream in pain? That's not okay. This sounds like either an abusive relationship, or one that could easily become that way. It's weird but I don't feel like it's abusive. He likes to mess with me and push my boundaries (in a playful way) and I think he forgets he's a lot stronger than I am sometimes. He let go as soon as I screamed and he apologized right after it happened. You're in a really precarious situation, and it's important you don't get any more isolated, because if you do,…

What can I do to make him feel more secure?

I'm not sure why he would feel that way because I wasn't drinking or sleeping a lot when I worked and/or had things to fill my time. I don't get drunk but it's still unusual for me.

Has he ever hurt you physically? Not in anger but he can be a little "rough" sometimes. We've talked about it and he stops for awhile but it always starts again. We were playing around the other day and he twisted my wrist until I screamed. Is he from a different culture to you? Yes, his family is from south America and I was raised here (in the U.S.) What is your relationship with your own family? I'm not very close with my family. My mother lives in another state with her boyfriend. Do you hav…

Does he improve himself? When was the last time he went to the gym, read a nonfiction book, or otherwise increased his personal power? He works out almost daily. He reads but not a lot. I'm not quite sure what you mean by personal power? He's a good husband. I think his strong personality kind of overpowers mine and intimidates me a little. I was also raised to respect men, especially my husband and I think I have a hard time asserting myself with him because I feel like it's wrong.

What does he expect you to do with your time? I've asked. He says I'm allowed to have a life and hobbies but I need to be respectful and smart about it. I told him I feel bored and kind of empty and he said to call MIL or SIL when I feel like that or find something to do for the family. I help take care of his grandmother and have her over once a week (she lives with his parents) to give MIL a break. I also take her to appointments sometimes. I babysit our nieces and nephews a lot too but I need…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
