I would say it's both. That men allow themselves to get physically abused by women definitly has roots in some fucked up ideas on what it means to be a man. Some feminists perpetuates this with the "reverse sexism doesn't exist"-argument. Since men have some inherited priviliges (as do women) they "can't" be abused. That is obviously not the case.
