7	Research shows Female Genital Mutiliation reduces the risk of HIV infection amongst women. This is frequently used as a reason for promoting male circumscision, so where does that leave us...? I think most of us wish we could just call it "genital mutilation" as well without specifying gender, but there is a huge opposition to that from society. Many people believe male and female genital mutilation are completely incomparable, and the law reflects this belief. FGM is illegal, circumcision is not only legal, but has funded research looking for its "health benefits". Encourage is a strong word, but downplay is sadly common. I often see comments along the lines of "I oppose it because it is useless, but how dare anyone call it mutilation and try to steal sympathy from the horrors of FGM". That being said, I don't believe feminists are remotely a factor in the perpetuation of MGM (I would say the opposite, in general). The point is that genital mutilation of males is called good because it has supposed "health benefits". As soon as FGM is brought into the picture, someone will always say "they're not at all comparable, because FGM is far worse and has zero health benefits." So IF FGM had benefits, would they then say it is not mutilation and should be up to the parents to decide? 4	The circumcision “debate” is missing the point: adults can do whatever they want to their genitals. No one gets to carve up a baby’s hoochie! I've never seen at as a superior/inferior thing. I know there are some bullying comments from intact men (it goes both ways, with all the comments about how disgusting the foreskin is), but I can't understand why people perceive intactivism as an attempt to make them feel inferior. I'm circumcised and the moment I learned what it was I felt shocked, and the more I researched the more upset I became. Maybe it's because I found out on my own rather than having someone trying to persuade me.
