Unfortunately, as one of my favourite blogs puts it: We will now perform an ancient and traditional Slate Star Codex ritual, where I point out something I don’t like about feminism, then everyone tells me in the comments that no feminist would ever do that and it’s a dirty rotten straw man. And then I link to two thousand five hundred examples of feminists doing exactly that, and then everyone in the comments No-True-Scotsmans me by saying that that doesn’t count and those people aren’t represen…

AskReddit is pretty switched-on about this. Stories about men being raped, losing everything in a divorce and so on tend to get sympathy and upvotes. The site is not a monolith.

That's the standard apathy to men's health problems. Like you don't need outright malice to explain this state of affairs, just the usual apathy. Governments have so many levers and knobs they can fiddle with that something like "who gets a vaccine?" won't get re-evaluated without public pressure. There are too many other things to consider day-to-day.

No, that's not what I meant. At the time it was being rolled out in schools, I think the understanding was girls could get cervical cancer from HPV and guys were a transmission vector but the virus didn't do too much to them. So if you vaccinated a girl you'd remove a cancer risk but vaccinating a boy didn't do much. Then later we found out just how much oral sex people were having, and the effect it had on mouth and throat cancers in both sexes. I mean, this is basically what /u/c_megalodon25 i…

Yeah from memory when this was rolling out in Australia they vaccinated girls first because it will statistically do more good. Then as supplies increased they started vaccinating boys at schools too. The bit about mouth and throat cancers from oral sex may have helped too. But "avoiding herd immunity because gynocentrism" is a pretty long bow to draw. You have to assume a lot of anti-male hate to do that, along with assuming that drug companies are not viciously interested in increasing profits…

Something I was reading elsewhere, a piece about Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor: She also talked about all the times people asked her whether she got into Yale Law School simply because she was Puerto Rican. “I wasn’t sassy enough then to say it might have helped that I was Phi Beta Kappa,” the justice noted slyly

It's nice to see something in the media actually talking about a program that a) frames men positively and b) is run to support men's needs. It's also interesting that the article mostly focuses on the lady who set it up, and the framing in part as "if the men packed up and left it would damage the service delivery and social fabric that relied on men's work". The program ran in Harrow in 2003, and was apparently pretty successful in getting women to move out and form relationships with the men …

This is a good comment, but there's more here than just strike-breaking. I want to focus on his role as an inspiration to rootless men. Let's use this segment from a recent radio interview. Peterson is great for men's rights when he gets up and says things like "it is appalling that men can grow up constantly being told that they're problematic and responsible for all the horrible things done by their forefathers, without hearing a single encouraging word their entire lives". He does this in a w…

From one of the most excellent blogs on the internet: As usual with gender issues, this can be best explained through a story from ancient Chinese military history. Chen Sheng was an officer serving the Qin Dynasty, famous for their draconian punishments. He was supposed to lead his army to a rendezvous point, but he got delayed by heavy rains and it became clear he was going to arrive late. The way I always hear the story told is this: Chen turns to his friend Wu Guang and asks “What’s the pena…

I think collected resources are valuable, but centralised organisations create points of failure that could be compromised. Even if you're not on the right (I'm not, I don't know where I sit any more), this "five righties" structure looks promising: https://status451.com/2017/11/11/radical-book-club-what-righties-can-do/

This bullshit is a real problem, because it's often pushed by talentless hacks and drives out the talented hackers, including the actual women-doing-tech who enjoyed being able to work in the industry without everyone tiptoeing around them: I've never been segregated into a "Women in X" group, away from the real action in a project. I've got enough clout to say no when I'm told I should be loyal and spend my time working on women's groups instead of technology. I'm not young or impressionable en…

Absolutely welcome and absolutely necessary. People just aren't primed to listen to men talking about their own problems, but when a woman says "hey there's actually something messed up here", people start to take notice.

God I'm naive. I saw the title and thought it was going to be someone discovering that yes, men don't actually get to celebrate maleness because we're cast as the bad guy, the abuser, the rapist, the murderer, the thug and whatever else. Never mind that we're also the protector, the worker, the builder, the shoveller-of-shit, and that other side of the coin never sees the light of day.

An inability to be content and an insatiable appetite for novelty. Set aside the evopsych or pair-bonding stuff, if you want. If someone's switched partners so frequently, it makes you wonder: what will make them satisfied? Will you be another short link in a long chain? If you're someone looking for commitment and family-raising, that appetite for novelty isn't a good trait in a partner.

It's a comparison of societal responses, not cancer types. Thanks to all the advertising and pink merchandise people have mentally tagged breast cancer as important, so it's using that to ask-without-asking "if breast cancer is important, and prostate cancer is in some sense worse, then why is prostate cancer not yet tagged important?"

Oh that's neat. I'd just assumed that it'd never make it to women's bathrooms, and was glad to see a men's health message in men's bathrooms at all.

Get in the habit of running videos at 1.5x or even 2x speed. It's a great way to get past filler words and slow speech. You can always slow down and rewind over the critical points.

I don't know if I can help you change her mind. But I will say this: unless there is a complete reversal and this was just a one-time anomaly (hard to tell b/c I don't know how long you've been together), don't stay with her. Break up. ABSOLUTELY THIS. I would even suggest breaking up right now, regardless of whatever tears and promises she might offer. Abusers ratchet up their abuse as they learn what they can get away with. It's hard enough for women to get out of abusive relationships despite…

Welcome aboard. You're in good company: I've never been segregated into a "Women in X" group, away from the real action in a project. Let me help: A feminist press release for this film could trumpet Cassie Jaye as a Hollywood actress who refused to subscribe to patriarchal gender roles. A mother and daughter team who took on the male Hollywood establishment and won. A woman who refused to be objectified – and stepped onto the other side of the lens. Instead feminists tried to stop the film being funded because they believed the film could pose a threat to feminism itself. The film has been portrayed as a Damascene conversion.…

Interestingly, groups enforce taboos when they're in a weird position between weakness and strength. If your group is weak, you can't try to enforce a taboo because nobody gives a shit. If your group is strong, you don't really need to enforce taboos because you have the power anyway.

I debated putting a /s on my other post, but I thought it was clear from "minor social faux pas". Guess it wasn't.
/r/MensRights11/02/16 07:47 AM

The "man-" prefix is an intensifier used to increase the severity of a minor social faux pas when the perpetrator is a man. There is no corresponding "woman-" prefix, so Fifield's remark doesn't make sense. The Liberal party have a reputation for being out-of-touch among the younger generations (it's Australia, everything's backwards, our Liberal Party is conservative), so of course he's not up-to-date on the latest lingo.

Similarly, in the Free Software world: I've also come to realize that I have an advantage that female newcomers don't: I was here before the sexism moral panic started. When a dozen guys decide to drink and hack in someone's hotel room, I get invited. They've known me for years, so I'm safe. New women, regardless of competence, don't get invited unless I'm along. That's a sexual harassment accusation waiting to happen, and no one will risk having 12 men alone with a single woman and booze. So th…
