Now my perfect Sunday would begin with...

The best self-improvement book is the one you get the most out of. For me, anything that is scientifically backed and rigorous gets through to me, so where some people find meaning in Tolle or Chopra, I read stuff backed by research. That would be Brene Brown, Carol Dweck, Heidi Halvorson, etc. In the end it's whatever gets you off your ass and motivates you to actually make the change.

I could see it as them being genuinely intimidated or feeling they won't be able to live up to what they perceive his standards would be. If they lack confidence or self-esteem then they would feel like they're not worthy, wonder why a guy like him would want to be with a girl like them, etc. It could go either way. But if they do lack self esteem that would also result in them flaking as well. They would think it wasn't worth their time because eventually he would see that he could do better an…

Your idea takes the way learning actually works and turns it completely around. If somebody succeeds wildly, they can point to any number of things that may have led to the success, including pure luck or happenstance, i.e. they have no clue what one or two things actually caused the successful outcome. Thus there is almost nothing to offer from a pure success. Learning occurs when one makes a mistake, analyzes that mistake and understands what caused it / why it happened. He saw the time and ex…

This action (or trick, if you prefer) will, in fact, allow anyone to overcome their approach anxiety. Because it's not a trick. It's a scientifically validated form of behavior modification known as exposure therapy. He is exposing himself repeatedly to an uncomfortable stimulus and then escalating until he becomes desensitized to it.

It could be that, or it could be the way you're asserting yourself is not very tactful. There is a wide gulf between saying, "I promised I would do this thing with my friend" versus, "Fuck you, I'll do what I want." It could be a shit test / immaturity on one of your parts, or it could be genuine disagreements, or it could be pure miscommunication. It's very hard to say without knowing your relationship dynamics. However, the one thing that is for sure is that some people have trouble accepting …

Well I know initially there was a deck of cards called Rejection Therapy that is still being sold online, but I believe he just started making it up at some point. If I remember correctly he would basically just be observant of things that made him uncomfortable and once he noticed something he would make it his next challenge or modify it into something that would be challenging but not too intimidating so he wouldn't avoid doing it.

Two words: Exposure therapy There are a lot of places you could go to learn more, but a great resource is Jia Jiang's youtube channel where he documents his 100 days of rejection challenges. He also wrote a book called Rejection Proof. https://www.youtube.com/user/DukieAjah/videos Also /r/howtonotgiveafuck It works. The trick is to set up challenges that excite you but don't scare the shit out of you and then just keep challenging yourself. Soon you'll realize your challenges have far outgrown y…

I'm with you on this but I'd take it a step further. At this stage what does the most for me is reading something that feeds one of my passions. Like I just read Acclerando by Charles Stross and for the past week I've been neck deep in futurology. And while the protests in Baltimore were occurring I was reading up on social justice issues and political essays about poverty. When I'm involved in things I personally care about on a deep level, I feel better about myself and strengthen my confidenc…

So first you have to learn to recognize a good bet, and then you get better at taking advantage of all the ones that come your way. Still sounds like the best method to achieve that is taking the risk more often than not.

Part of the problem is in this idea: "if it's not going to work" When you say that to yourself you have to check your motivations. Work... For what? To impress other people or to achieve something for you? I'd wager it is the former. You need to set goals you achieve for yourself and not for other people.

I made pdfs of all the exercises in the book. If anyone is interested I'd be willing to share. Edit: Here is a folder of the PDFs I created. Let me know if you guys have any trouble seeing it or the files in it. I did realize these exercises are from "When Panic Attacks" so they may not be exactly the same. There are also a few other worksheets I found helpful from around the internet, like the Vicious & Virtuous cycle sheet.

The moment MensRights revealed itself to be a genuine echo chamber for no purpose other than self-aggrandizement. The article raises numerous good points about institutional and societal level pressures, and I specifically came here to see if the article was posted and how it was treated. I'm a man. I support the idea of men's rights just as I support the idea of women's rights, gay rights, etc. I support social justice and equality for all. But this article raises valid points and is fairly wel…

It would but he just has mental issues with doing that. At that point I think it's an insecurity/fear problem I've been trying to help him get past but without much success so far. One of these days we'll crack it, though.

I have a friend who has been completely blind from birth and he has difficulties with women as well. A lot of it is mental... because he's blind he is extremely habituated and organized (a place for everything, everything in its place), so doing things spontaneously is more difficult for him. He lives in a place that is not convenient to a major city or mass transit, so dates are much harder as well. He's charming and funny, but he never escalates because kino is much harder to establish. For in…

I have a particular way of getting over LMR. I'm a writer as a hobby, which most people think is cool. So if we're in bed and I want to escalate I'll say "I'm going to tell you a story" and then I describe what I would do to her. And then I start doing it. I go very slowly, take my time and linger over areas, speak as sensually as I can, etc.

I have two questions: 1) Why don't you like that person. 2) Do you feel as though the person you are is static and unchanging?

I found something I cared deeply about intrinsically. Everything else flowed from there. If there is something you desire, that forms the core of your person, everything else forms around it and gives you purpose and meaning. For me that led to a new job, new activities, a renewed sense of well-being and pride in who I was as a human being. This is the long view of self-improvement though. It will take a lot longer than just working on your posture or going out and approaching, but I personally …

Which he specifically states he has already visited, and whose advice he trusts less than Seddit's... And for good reason. I've been there a few times and the advice they give pretty much just ends up being a pretty standard, mundane profile.

I'm not going to downvote you for this response like the rest, but I'm genuinely curious why you say that. Is that just from the headline or did you actually read the whole excerpt?

I personally think it's great. I made my own versions of all the worksheets he has in the book and I've sent them to friends and talked them through how to use them.

A lot of the need for validation, as I've experienced it, was actually just a manifestation of anxiety. Of self-doubt about not being good enough. To that effect I would strongly, strongly encourage you either purchase, read and do everything recommended in When Panic Attacks by David Burns or go to see a mental health professional who specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

There is a clear and distinct difference between a COMPLETELY verbal interaction and an action that includes physical violation. In BOTH of the examples you used you compared an obvious physical affront to a completely verbal interaction. How do you reconcile the two and then equate them? edit: missed the "put my arm around her" part. Makes it a little less cool, but still not the same as bending someone over and putting them in an extremely vulnerable position that is supremely submissive in a …

"Is it save to turn around, speed up beside em' and say hello? What does this mean? What is the proper response?" This is pretty much a textbook direct approach. "Hey, you are way too cute not to say hi to, What's your name" or something like that.

I feel as though a post like this should find its way in some form in the sidebar. This kind of writing is absolutely essential for people newer to pickup (or outsiders//naysayers) to read to better understand why most people come to it in the first place. I love the way you phrased your outlook on emotions and intimate behaviors. It's really true, most people never do learn genuinely constructive ways to approach so many emotional situations.

I'm actually skilled socially, I just had, and still do sometimes, serious approach anxiety. Eventually, it will all fall into place and I'll find someone. I still don't approach as much as I should, escalate quickly enough, and I've never tried any night game when it comes to bars and clubs. I've had some success isolating women at parties, so I'm getting there. Are you me? I am afraid of escalation. I hesitate to escalate even with girls that do show interest in me so i end up getting together…

I personally find that just getting out and living life is the best thing for dealing with that, but maybe I'm in a more solid place than somebody who was in a 10yr childhood relationship, re: my outlook on being in a relationship. After a breakup I'm more inclined to go rock climbing or something like that. "What's that? The girl is gone? I just climbed a god damned mountain. Who the hell cares about girls?"

This is a common problem for anyone going through a major life change. People who are trying to "lose weight" or "get in shape" often get into a bad place where once they achieve their goal, it is no longer good enough and keep pushing through, heedless or what they actually want or need, or will even make them happy. Every time you achieve a milestone you need to genuinely stop and determine if you're still heading in a direction you want to go in, and then get back on track of achieving your g…

Small adjustment to your advice: I've found talking just behind someone's ear works better. They can still hear you but you aren't blowing air directly into their ear, which is really damned annoying. I absolutely hate when somebody talks directly into my ear in a loud place.
