“I’ve gone on what she’s told me”… yeah, don’t make that mistake again!

Why would you be paying £500-£600/month in child maintenance? Make sure you have at least 50/50 time with your child and then there’s no maintenance either way. Also, I just checked the child maintenance calculator, and you’d have to be on £60k/year (~£3700/month take home) and the child never overnights with you to be paying ~£550/month. Surely you can afford rent of £1250 on that salary?

Before I got married a friend said “love is in the heart, but marriage is in the gut.” Yeah… wish I’d listened to my gut.

Ex wife used to regularly threaten me with divorce as a way of controlling me. Eventually I called her on it and said ok, mostly to try and get her to knock it off with the divorce threatening. She arranged couples therapy. I was hopeful we might work it out, and said as much to ex wife, but I lined up a divorce lawyer just in case. First session of therapy the therapist asked why we were there. Ex wife immediately said “he wants a divorce and already got a lawyer!”. That clarified my thoughts! …

Just so I understand, you’re currently doing 50/50 in reality, but in mediation tentatively agreed to 60/40 in future? No reason you have to be held to that 60/40 if it’s not finalised. Courts favour a balance of 50/50 and the status quo - which in your case is 50/50. How to row it back? “The kids are thriving with the current schedule, and on reflection I think it will be better for the kids to maintain the stability of their current routine than to have another change.”

First: any decisions in mediation are by consensus between you and ex. The mediator can’t decide anything for you, all they do is ensure you have a respectful and hopefully productive discussion. If you and ex can’t decide in mediation, and don’t continue mediation, you either continue muddling through, or one of you applies to family court. Second: in the UK there is no such thing as “primary custody”. Both parents have parental responsibility and a right to be involved in the child’s life deci…

You can’t co-parent with a narcissist, look up parallel parenting instead. There’s a great book: The Parallel Parenting Solution by Carl Knickerbocker. Get a co-parenting app like Our Family Wizard and only interacting with her through there. Get it written into the court order that all communication etc. is through the app. You’ll want your court order to be comprehensive, specific and unambiguous about handover times etc. Find a lawyer that has experience with high conflict people. Never say d…

My stbxw is finally moving out in 2 weeks. About 2 weeks ago I stopped doing any cleaning/tidying because, well, what’s the point when she’ll just make it messy again in a few hours. She’s definitely noticed, but hasn’t seemed to click that it was me doing all the work, and she’s confused about why the house is so messy all of a sudden. Anyway, in 2 weeks I’ll tidy and clean the house top to bottom and it’ll just stay clean and tidy from then on.
