Trusting oneself is so key. About a year ago, the thought kept running through my mind, "I don't trust men." One day, my brain rephrased it to, "I don't trust myself (around men)." In other words, it has nothing to do with other people. Rather, it is about building trust with myself which is within my control / influence. It was a powerful realization because if I trust myself, I can always fall back on myself no matter what others may throw out me or abandon me.

She needs to get the f out. After I had my son, ex ILs were staying with us. This was my first week postpartum. Keep in mind, I had been in labor for 48+ hours when I finally had him. Think sleep deprivation plus all the physical impacts of childbirth. Ex ILs visited during these 48 hours so they knew I was exhausted. After we get home, ex storms into our room one evening and demands, "what's wrong with you?!" I was physically and emotionally exhausted and struggling with getting the nursing thi…

The one that got away = the one I can no longer potentially control or influence. It's about power, not love... If the ex got away, it is likely because she wanted to get away from an LVM. If he had wanted to then, he would have at the time. He didn't then, but he goes on a self-pity trip now.

My exh cheated as well, with Hootresses. Not sure if he ever realized all they needed was just the tip, not him... But yeah, best thing to happen. I have so much peace and joy in my life without him trying to drain me and resent me at the same time.

I was pondering something related earlier today. I sometimes hear men say they need to be needed (by their GFs/wives). It has also been said that whoever cares less in a relationship has the upper hand. I suspect this kind of messaging is intended to create a power dynamic where a woman thinks she needs a BG/husband so she cares more and exerts more resources (and consequently has less power).

Agreed. It could happen, but it is rare. Anybody can spout off the right soundbites and muster up some false humility to make it seem like they experienced some personal growth. (I'm sure my ex did -- he's the cheater / addict but got remarried 16 months after the divorce was final. Meanwhile, I'm happily single and exploring the uncomfortable issues that are part of personal growth).

True! In hindsight, I realized my ex married me to look more legitimate to his peers and chain of command at work (my dad is a retired officer whose name he would drop back then to puff himself up). 16 months after our divorce was final, he monkey-branched and married a cop. If she knew what I knew, I doubt she would have married him. He goes to great lengths to make sure I never meet her -- gee, wonder why? 🤔

The patriarchy's worst fear is a woman in touch with her own desires. - Valerie Rein, "Patriarchy Stress Disorder"

Self care/love means being willing to be the only one who loves, hears, and sees yourself. If you're single, you have your own back. If you're in a relationship, you have your own back AND you can be involved from a position of autonomy. Self care can mean external indulgences and treats but those are secondary to loving yourself on the inside. The patriarchy's worst fear is a woman who knows her own desires. How do you know your own desires? By connecting with and loving yourself as you are.

I'm divorced in my 40s, and my dad will occasionally ask how's my social (read "dating) life and remind me that I'm not getting any younger. I remind him that desperation is not a healthy dating or husband-finding strategy and to see Exhibit A (i.e. my first marriage). I've been working on freeing myself of his mindset that a woman only has value if another man cares to marry her. I doubt he'll ever change his outlook but it doesn't mean I have to adopt it.

I am having lots of fun and me time doing manicures and paying more attention to a skincare routine. And there is no ex whining to put a damper on my self-care efforts because it costs money. Yes. The JAG websites for most Army bases will have something about this: AR (army regulation) 608-99 (other branches of the military call it something different). Yup. I had a 6 week fling after ex and I agreed to divorce and decided that was so draining so I put myself in a dating/sex quarantine for over another year. Grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc. can be indicators of cognition. There is a time and place for shorthand and abbreviations, but those should be limited instances. When my son was in 2nd grade, his textbook defined a sentence as a complete thought. My ex-husband claimed that everything I bought was expensive but dropped over $20k at the orange-butted breastaurant in a couple years, about $1600 to make a DUI go away (after drinking too much at said breastaurant), bought/souped up/hid a muscle car without telling me (I still figured it out).

I had a similar thought a few months after learning about my ex-husband's infidelity: " what if I just hold this marriage in the same level of regard as he does?" I have one child, but at 42, I don't want any more for both lifestyle and medical reasons. I don't see what there is to gain from it at this point. I keep some notes in my planner from a book I read (I don't have the title noted, sorry), but the point was about mindfulness and hobbies. They can be pleasure-focused (passive, escapist) or mastery-oriented (active, hands-on, linked to one's values and general self-improvement). There is a time and place for both, but if all of one's hobbies are only pleasure-focused/passive, that suggests to me an individual is not well-rounded and expects the world to entertain him/her (and probably LV).

Agreed. That would take a lot of work, though i.e. letting women know that their sense of self worth should not come from whether a male validates them or not. And ideally that would start from childhood but until then, we can share our experiences and the FDS approach.

If women collectively maintained standards and boundaries, then LVMs would have to improve themselves or be left out of dating/mating/gene pool. It is far easier to disparage women than leave their comfort zones of complacency and entitlement.

Yup: covert narc, alcoholic, covert misogynist, entitled golden son (thanks, ex MIL), financially/psychologically abusive. Life is so much better now, but i will share my cautionary tales about marrying an LVM.

All this with my ex went down in a certain orange-a$$ed breastaurant aka an emotional brothel. The place is disgusting, too: they post pics of their waitresses posing and add text along the lines of "Amy can't wait to see you today. Stop by and ask to sit in her section."

It isn't just about "young p*ssy", it is also about having the upper hand because he is benefiting from her inexperience (i.e. that older men don't have her welfare at heart). In my ex's case, it was also about the ego boost of having her on his arm in front of other guys. To him, she was just another object to bolster his image management.

Yeah, they're looking for a vulnerable point of entry. Long story short: divorced my ex husband for infidelity among other things. I confirmed the cheating because he discarded an old cell phone in our garage thinking I would never find it. Anyhow, I read through the messages and there's an exchange between ex and a buddy/enabler where buddy says, "bruh, if she has daddy issues, you're in." Disgusting. Ex was 38 at the time; his target was 17.

LV dating is a numbers game. HV dating is a discernment game.

LV types can show up in any type and any typing system so I stay away from using it for dating purposes. If anything, I use it for self-awareness of my dominant preferences. As for choosing friends / partners, I look to their behavior to determine their staying power in my life.

Supposedly the INTJ-ENFP is an ideal coupling but I could never understand that. I am INTJ and most ENFPs I have encountered annoy and exhaust me (and that is just on the platonic level). Nor do I want to be "cracked"; I relax around people who have earned my trust not LVMs.

My son sometimes asks me for dinner. I usually say something like bread with tears or passive-aggressive sighs. (We take turns cooking and sometimes he figures out his own meals, but i don't want him thinking it is a woman's role to cook for a man and be so excited/honored to do it).

Oh, in my first few postpartum days, my ex asked me to be more sociable and at one point stormed into our room accusing me of making his (manipulative) mom cry. This was after 2+ days of labor and difficulties with getting nursing started. At the most vulnerable point in my life -- physically and psychologically, they expected me to be a cheerful Stepford wife/hostess despite perineal tears and engorged breasts. Good riddance.

Ex-husband was raised as a golden son who can do no wrong. Ex MIL still enables his behavior. (Ex FIL is still in the picture but just goes along with everything and feigns helplessness on just about everything -- so useless he may as well be absent). A few months ago when our son was with his dad for the weekend and ex ILs were visiting, ex proceeds to get blackout drunk and make a fool of himself. Ex MIL looks at my son and tells him, "no one needs to know about this" (no one means me but obvi…

Exactly. My ex-husband left an old cell phone in a garbage bag in our garage. I found it while decluttering and hacked it since he had been behaving oddly the past few months. (That is how I confirmed his "boys' weekend" had been a co-ed boys' weekend involving a teenaged pick-me orange-butted waitress.) Among other things, he also whined to a buddy that he had to keep it quiet because he didn't want to lose "half of HIS worldly goods". Nevermind that the assets were jointly owned and I had main…

Right -- it's not man-hating. Rather, it's LV-behavior-hating. If they can't choose better, higher-value behavior, that's on them. It is on us to be more discerning and observant and respond accordingly. That is FDS from my point of view.

Yup! We can still love LV people -- whether it be platonically or romantically -- from a distance. Just because we care about someone, it doesn't mean they deserve proximity to us. Rather, the quality of their behavior/actions determines proximity and access.

This kind of request from men only serves to intensify my RBF. And the thought in my head goes like this: "aww, you poor emotionally unstable creature who feels it is necessary to get a stranger to smile so you feel like you have some degree of power/control in this world." I am wary of anyone -- male or female -- who tries to tell me how to feel or how/when to express myself emotionally. That type usually has no/low emotional boundaries (whining "you made me feel..." and then cue the name calli…

I know. I have experienced and heard so much anecdotal evidence from other miltary ex-spouses that military status/history is a potential red flag in the dating realm.

The entitlement is pretty extreme. I know plenty of former military spouses on my infidelity recovery groups. They operate from the same playbook. And they seem to think veteran/military status compensates for LV behavior. I find it interesting that a lot of FB friend requests I get are from widowed deployed commissioned officers. They're obviously scammers, but they think they think the veteran/widowed/deployed status will get me to stroke their egos or send them money. "Nah, dude, and while yo…

Word. LVMs can be very good at impression management. My ex-husband is a major in the military, makes decent money, has a nice house in an upper middle class neighborhood, a 2 yo old truck, and knows how to shmooze and dress the part. He's also an alcoholic, a cheater, and a covert narcissist/misogynist and can't emotionally engage with anyone to save his life.

I remember decluttering and throwing out some decorative pillows my ex had used when napping on the couch in the basement (also where he hid to watch porn) several years ago. I noticed there was a light powder on them -- guessing it was dead skin and whatever else. I tried not to touch it and threw them in the garbage bag but I do remember some of the "dust" flying off the pillow into the air. The next day I got something like food poisoning. I don't recall eating anything questionable, but I su…

I wish I'd seen this 20 years ago... But I am pleased to report that I can have that attitude at 42. Post-divorce, I have furthered my education, strengthened my friendships, improved my finances (easy to do when you're not married to someone who can't/won't use a checkbook or discuss money), planned vacations to be fun not cheap, and given up people-pleasing. I may get to dating again, but if I never have a LTR again, I won't mind. So liberating!
