Neither. We got a paralegal to do all the paperwork ($750). We got a lawyer for her to look over everything to make sure she wasn't getting shortchanged ($1500). I insisted on the lawyer so she couldn't claim years later, "had I received proper legal counseling I never would have agreed to this settlement..." Court filing cost ($450). Grand total: $2700.

I waited many years as well (more than 10). I was waiting for our youngest child to turn 18. I didn't want to put our kids through a custody battle.

Not sure if this answers the question you're asking but I NEVER say anything bad about my ex because I don't want to be trashing my children's mother. You never know what's going to get back to them, especially if the the relationship gets serious and the woman winds up meeting my kids. I also feel it's bad form to accuse someone of a serious thing like abuse when they're not there to defend themselves. It's possible to explain why you're divorced without trashing your ex.

Hello my friends, Thanks for all your advice and perspectives. Here's what I did yesterday: I sent her a ecard (which is free) that said Happy Mother's Day. Period. No message.No other words. She sent me an email later with the words, "Thank you very much." Period. No other words. I was happy!

We got divorced six months ago. I could see my ex sending me a father's day card. We've been amicable for pragmatic reasons. Fighting divorcees equals rich lawyers. Beyond that, I don't want a "relationship" but I do want to acknowledge that she is the mother of my children

I want to thank all those who gave their experience and advice last year. Here's what I did: We hired a paralegal who guided us through which forms needed to be filled out, and helped us fill them out. The paralegal drafted the settlement agreement in legalese. I had my wife hire a lawyer to look it over to protect her interests (and protect me from future problems). Then the paralegal rewrote the settlement agreement, submitted everything to the court; and we are now divorced. Finalized. Fully …
