You nailed it. Speaking of hamfisted political characters, I find that these characters often feel really artificial. Their character is defined by their gender/race/sexuality instead of that being a part of a nuanced and well fleshed out character. No wonder people lose interest.

I feel like you're overlooking a key point with this But boys have been and always will be the ones who read fictional stories about strong heroes and nasty villains who fight desperate battles with each other with the fate of the world in the balance.
