Two reasons: Upon searching Seddit I did not see anything specifically mentioning my predicament. Secondly, my friend gave me the general idea and I ran with it. I will say based on some of your more self deprecating comments and in your OP, I think you need to work on yourself. I'm in the same boat where I don't have that self confidence I used to and even when going on dates it makes me feel hollow. Make sure you are happy with your appearance and don't let what some girl said actually get to you.

A more basic level would just be that he did things that got him social experience and gave him confidence. But with the working out he needed to become more attractive. People aren't attracted to out of shape people because it shows they are lazy or do not care about their own well being. So seeing someone in shape means they care, and take care of their bodies. You give her an out, both by saying she is leaving, and by directly asking for a date/number ASAP.
