Eh, not really good advice. Employment is simply the selling of labor to an employer. If OP believes his labor is worth more than “L’s” labor and L is making more than OP: He should ask for a raise or leave and sell his labor at a higher rate. Depends where you’re at. 1080p 100 FPS on AAA titles isn’t too pricey though f you don’t have the “I have to have the best hardware” mindset. Yes the US is a mixed economy. The degree to which it should be mixed is absolutely up for debate.
