Its not tax deductible for the payer anymore so in some states you're either forced to work forever now (it adjusts up if you get promoted but they will NEVER reduce it) or if your principle just isn't high enough you'll die in the streets or prison. Running through a few state calculators now. If you divorce a SAH spouse it's essentially murder. None of these results come close to affording rent and food at a poverty level. It's usually 40-50% plus now that it's after tax and not deductible take out your usual 30% of income tax BEFORE you pay the previous amount which is still 40-50% of the pre-tax number. I was focusing less on the representation and more on the HORRIBLE Mary Sue'ing. Samus is bearable because she can lose. Ripley is bearable because she can lose. Rey is like the big-budget version of the little-sister that's in every Nickelodeon and Disney Channel show. Zero reason for it yet somehow she's a computer genius, witty, and can beat up men much larger than her who have trained in combat for longer than they've been alive.

Could it be that Ripley's competence made sense? Could it be that we felt like Ripley could fail and did a few times while every single moment Rey is on screen we KNOW she's going to succeed? Could it be because Ripley's plot was focused around surviving the threat in her immediate area and not unsubtle political jabs? No. Must be something else. Get marketing on it.
