Dunno. Mycelium doesn't require light, but for it to produce mushrooms, a photo period is necessary. Perhaps it's an adaptation ensuring the spores are realeased at the surface where they can spread farther.
Keep in mind that OP, through his lies and false analogies is not only promoting mycological illiteracy about psychoactive mushrooms, but all mushrooms in general.
This is why you're never really going to find mushrooms growing in a pitch black cave. They also need some time to dry out a bit, instead of keeping them completely soaked.
