Focus on your path and take time to learn about different software and computer languages companies uses in this time and age either through YouTube, finding guides, or reading books. Make a LinkedIn account to try to network with different IT folks and companies - this will help you understand what the IT field is looking for nowadays. Don't let my story ruin your perspective of future IT careers as it may be different in other companies/locations. IT is very broad and already growing field and there's so much choices you can research to see which one you want to follow. From my experience going the Sysadmin route I would focus more on getting the correct certificates for my field instead of wasting time/money on ones I don't need.
