Why so down on stepfathers?

That's how I was introduced to Reddit. My colleague from tech was just constantly on it.

Homes for violent women would make so much more sense, considering a lot of countries have far too few (if any) shelters for domestically abused men.

That’s a fair point, that whole “body positivity movement” in recent years has certainly not been particularly inclusive.

I feel like women refusing to date men over superficialities (especially height) is by society as a whole seen as somewhat more acceptable than men exercising the same right.

I agree, it does sound like it’s straight out of a dystopian novel.

I have no trouble admitting that I am; hats off to anyone who is willing to always fight for their convictions nevermind at what personal cost.

I think it’s important to not only care for causes of groups one belongs to oneself.

As a woman, I feel somewhat comfortable talking about my interest in men’s rights to my male friends, but I’m not prepared for the minefield of bringing it up with female friends

Oh, that does hit a nerve. I’ve recently been looking for a book subscription and the amount of businesses that advertise with a focus on being a female-led company or only working with female authors was overwhelming. Wanted to see if I could find a subscription only offering books by male authors and of course that’s not a thing.

Interesting read, thank you for the link!

As a woman I feel like I can’t talk to my female friends about men’s rights issues because I know that I’ll be treated as if I “betrayed the sisterhood” and suddenly become a person that condones any awful thing that was ever done to any woman in the history of mankind ever. As if it’s not possible to find it problematic that shelter for male victims of domestic violence is severely underfunded and have sympathy for a female rape victim at the same time.

No, I totally understand your scepticism! I’d be the same, especially on the internet where people just say stuff to appear particularly nice / empathetic / whatever. I cared greatly for my ex and it has genuinely made me very sensitive towards this issue, just because I’ve experienced very closely what it can do to a man’s self-esteem and it’s heartbreaking. (In case it matters that I really wasn’t subconsciously just looking for a taller man to swoop me off my feet - he was the one who broke u…

Quite right! I should go back and ask him why he didn’t make more of an effort.

My mum had a very similar attitude and depending on the relationship one has with one’s mother I can definitely see why it might get under her skin. I hope you two have a long and strong relationship :) It can be hard to ignore stupid comments, especially something that is so engrained in society, but I hope that as long as you two are happy together that she can eventually get over it.

I do, does that devalue my opinion? I didn’t date my ex because he was short, I’m not dating my current boyfriend because he is tall. I wasn’t secretly hoping / waiting to meet someone tall and at no point did I ever rule out a man from my dating pool for being short.

It’s absolutely vile. I used to date a short guy for a while and the amount of harassment he had to endure from complete strangers for absolutely no reason was mind-boggling. I only got a glimpse of what it can be like to be a short(er) man and can only imagine how toxic some women can be about this.

At 19 he is still nearly a child himself, whereas she is a married woman with a job. Obviously non-consensual sex is awful in either case, but the wording of these headlines is horrendous.

“If you think it’s my turn to apologise, it’s clear you don’t see what the actual problem here is.”

I am constantly censoring myself around other women, it’s too exhausting having to defend myself for not being a feminist and being bombarded with stupid questions / accusations like “So, you don’t enjoy being able to vote? Why can’t you support a system that’s done so much for you?”

Not sure it’s much of a joke, considering the mindset of that subreddit.

Wish I could say I can’t believe the hypocrisy of calling her “the real victim”, but nothing really surprises me anymore.

That’s just plain awful! And this happening to him in his place of work makes it even harder to do something about it / get out of the situation.

Very true. Views held by a few extreme feminist groups are one thing, continuous perpetuation by major international organisations is quite another.

From what my fiancé tells me, it sounds like his ex-wife definitely abused him (mentally and physically) and he can barely admit that it was ABUSE and makes excuses for her and waters it down. No surprise when society maintains the idea that men don’t suffer domestic abuse. It’s maddening and I feel for any man that has to go through this - whilst at the same time facing stigma / disbelief when opening up about it. It’s truly sad.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
