1	does being a "nice guy" hurt your game? I'd highly recommend "No More Mr. Nice Guy" by Dr. Robert Glover. At the very least, please listen to an interview of his where he discusses his ideas. There's nothing wrong with being chivalrous and polite, that's not how I'd even define a "nice guy." There's absolutely no need to be an asshole either. A problem case "nice guy" may share some of these behaviours, but really there's a lot more going on internally that's negatively affecting his game.
