I think JP is an absolute hack when it comes to polisci etc (just watch his debate with Zizek, he was so clearly out of his depth there), but he does have a good understanding of the patriarchy and social dynamics. The problem is that he doesn’t really think that the patriarchy is a bad thing.

I don't always agree with Esthel Perel but one thought of hers was interesting to me. Basically, throughout human history, men have always had a license to cheat and have invented justifications such as "this is natural/evolutionary/etc" to back it up. She then goes on to say that we simply do not know how women would behave if granted the same freedom or how men would behave if they were not allowed to do these things. Because of that, I am inclined to be skeptical when stuff like that comes in…

Thank you for saying that! It is so easy to internalize this as just my personal failure at making friends, it's validating when other people have similar experiences. The locals definitely tend to stick with their own here. Sometimes it seems to me like the default mode of making connections for them is to pick their social circle very early in school/uni and then carry that friendship through their lives regardless of whether it's still a good fit for them or not. Like someone will diligently …

I go to a martial arts class that is mostly male btw and after a year there I still don't even know most people's names! In my home country, once I would start going to a sports practice semi-regularly, friendships would form and people would hang out regularly after the class. Here, unless people already know each other and come to the class together, everyone just nods to each other and goes on to their daily business. It is baffling to me but it's also an experience I share with many ex-pats,…

I live in the Nordics, where due to cultural reasons it’s already very difficult to meet people IRL. It’s just not in the culture to strike a conversation with a stranger in daily social settings, and I don’t really go out to clubs or parties much. To add to that, I am a foreigner and don’t have a huge social network here, so my chances of meeting someone offline are minuscule. If someone can offer an alternative to OLD in my situation, I would honestly appreciate it because I feel like if I don…

This is how they take pictures of dogs with their owners for Purina commercials.

That’s because incels and RP men are obsessed with jawlines. A dead giveaway.

This is so well put! This is something that I always struggle with when thinking about non-binary genders — if I identified as non-binary, I could put my pronouns in my social media bios and on my CV, I could even make enough people comply with it but it seems like there is just no way around being viewed as a child bearer anyway despite all that. It’s a really depressing thing for me.

Happened to me yesterday: a guy on OLD learned that we do similar things at work and immediately starts going off on me about how he would enjoy learning this one skill from another dev, and how his job is difficult without it and his projects stall. Mind you, this is someone I haven’t even met yet, and literally every sentence starts with “I”. It is commonplace in tech to mentor other people and exchange ideas, but it’s a two way street. If you ask someone for their time and effort, it’s on you…

It is a huge pet peeve of mine when people cannot take anything seriously and use every opportunity to practice their class clown routine. I don’t care if it makes me sound like a buzzkill, someone who has this total aversion to being sincere is not someone you want as a partner.

It's been disappointing, to say the least! Although from what I can tell men here step up way more than most when it comes to domestic labor, child care, etc, it's still way less than their fair share IMO. That's exactly the thing, I don't need anyone to pay for me. I am not excessively rich but I'm comfortable and can treat myself to dinners in way nicer restaurants than I usually end up in for first dates. I value thoughtfulness and generosity in people I date, I value that they want me to hav…

I live in the Nordics although I wasn't born here. I'd say the general sentiment among women is something like "it's nice when the man pays but it's not mandatory", I haven't heard many opinions from men but it's rare that they pay on the first date. I grew up in a culture that values generosity and hospitality, and with the notion that the one who makes the invitation pay, so it reads anywhere from disinterested to plain rude to me. That said, I would say that the dating culture here is overall…

I currently live in a culture where the default expectation is paying for oneself on dates. Even with that, I still get asked out for coffee and walks all. the. time. It's not even about being stingy at this point, these are literally people trying to play the numbers game, flip through the maximum amount of women and invest the minimal effort possible to determine whether someone is a viable prospect for their goals. If someone cannot commit to having a conversation for 2 hours to get to know m…

I live in the Nordics and I can guarantee that if that man arrives in Finland expecting women to throw themselves at him he’s in for a rude awakening.

That was my first thought! If there are already plenty of women who will fuck you, why are you wasting your time trying to convince someone who won’t?

I don’t really get 4, could someone explain it to me? I don’t want children right now and possibly ever, but if I did, I would also prioritize that. If me and my partner would have different desires here, I would break up with them regardless of how amazing the relationship is otherwise. How is that a red flag?

I know right? Pushing me to bring you home is more than a turn off, that behavior creeped me out so much. You’d think an adult man should be able to read the situation but no, apparently the fact that we don’t flee the internet or run away screaming is an invitation to continue. I realized later when I found FDS that this was also in line with the rest of his behavior, like subtle negs he threw around all evening. I also live in a smaller town so I’ve ran into that guy a bunch of times at the mo…

I went on one rather disappointing date with a guy I met on OLD in summer 2019. Not a complete disaster but really not a good match for me. One big red flag was I mentioned was housesitting for a friend who has two cats and he was really pushing me to let him come over and 'omg meet her kitties!!'. Like dude, I've known you for 2 hours, I'm not inviting you to a house that is not even my own (also not nearly attractive enough to try and pull this lol). It was my first date after an LTR and not d…

This. Testosterone is a helluva drug, it is far easier for men to drop weight, gain muscle and become leaner. If I had this opportunity I would fucking jump on that but a lot of them are absolutely unwilling to put in any work whatsoever so they just glance over that. Men not only perpetuate a physical beauty standard that is unattainable for many women, they also want it to appear effortless. Wah-wah, what do you mean you won’t be downing beers and burgers with me? Why are you leaving for the g…

I’m gonna be generous here and assume this is a very bad case of a few of the Geek Social Fallacies, that’s the vibe I am getting from his (albeit probably heavily sanitized) post. Regardless, this would be a divorceable offense for me. I cannot imagine looking at my husband with loving eyes after an episode like that, this is something that would make me instantly lose respect for him.

I wouldn’t hold much hope. Notice how he is saying in the comments that he will cut out the incel friends if she wants him to? Like the dude is totally fine with being friends with someone harassing his poor wife otherwise.

Her ex-husband, Dmitry Grachyov, also put binders on her arms and was keeping track of time so that she wouldn’t bleed too much because the punishment for murder is much more severe that for major harm to health. Margarita also had to go to court 5(!) times before her ex-husband finally lost his parental rights. Because apparently you can try to axe off your wife’s hands being very meticulous and deliberate about it but that does not mean you can’t be a good father to your kids! There is literal…
