Thank you for the thoughtful reply. I did therapy for almost a decade. If I need to rely on therapy, I am thoroughly doomed.

Thank you for doing all that. It's an interesting perspective. I'm gonna try to practice this. I live inside my head as the norm and I've never considered it anything but normal. Maybe it's an only child thing.

I see this is two votes for persona changing. With these kind of experiences though, it becomes a cock-fest instead of something fun. If someone is already so loud that the whole neighborhood knows they are talking and seeking attention, or, a person goes from reasonably socially normal to forcing entire groups (say at a party) to comply to his control. I've watched a lot of this shit over the years. My persona(s) aren't made up of things like that. And frankly, I don't want to have to successfu…

I see what you mean. I also can note that the male friends I have are all way more competent than I am. Not necessarily because they set out to be so, but just their experiences throughout life are more varied than mine. It's clear to me now why I was never found attractive in mixed company. It's not I am not attractive, rather I'm leagues behind in competency compared to other men. The discouraging part is that it's a lot like looks in a way that it's just the road one walks. It's not something…

Where or with what does one engage this discomfort? Like for real. If I was young, one thing that would come to mind would be to try making navy seal or similar; that's a clear path. Where am at now, I have all the pieces of myself I've collected, and I can't really drop everything to dedicate myself to that level of discomfort. I do the bite size uncomfortable; Lifting or eating right is not often joyous. I make sure I'm learning and growing regularly just out of base life satisfaction.

Until as fella said above, when another dude can fix my girls furnace when I can't, I'll have a cheater on my hands. Yet I don't really have time or interest to be a furnace repair man.

Thanks for replying. This is very complicated. I'm certainly not an empty husk of a person. What you say is very opposite of the idea self love and being good enough. I've chosen the hobbies, interests and skills in my life because I found them interesting or compelling to me. I guess I should've thought a little more about how they perform on the dating market.

And what if you never get to a life you're genuinely excited about? My take away from childhood and growing up was a sense that life is circumstance. I am a product of that. I've done ok, but it's probably 5% of what could've been. How does one work with that?

Competence is the most primal female attractant. Housewives will literally cheat with you if you can fix her car or repair her furnace or cut the lawn better and more effortlessly than her husband can. I don't condone enabling cheating, but the concept is that powerful. With that said, it's probably better I stay away.

Can you make a woman cum on demand? That’s an underrated party trick. Really easy to get a woman addicted to you if you can do that. That sounds specific to particular (emotional) attributes of woman as opposed to the skill of a man.

Did I mention I'm old? That creates a problem with looks that is part of the recipe. I'll will check them out though. Thank you!

I'm having the realization that intimacy and relationship is far less divine happenstance and far more intentional pursuit and strategy. I'm now to old to be taken seriously in the dating pool, but it's nice to now know why I didn't get anywhere when the time was upon me.

My original post was about the complexities of this topic / subreddit: I'm a sad 52 year old virgin. Ok, got that out of they way... Reading some things here kinda by accident, I had no idea activities related to building intimacy where so complex, in a good way. I'm the type of person that likes solving problems and working out fine details. Not only did I miss out on sex and intimacy, but i missed out on some possibly satisfying pursuit as well. I had no idea; I thought it was more of an event…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
