I'm a large straight guy who grew up in Texas. As a child, I loved music, nature, animals and reading, and still do to this day. I lost my father when I was young so obviously various other older men in my orbit took it upon themselves to "show me how being a man works" or whatever. Every time I refused to go on a hunting trip I was called weak and gay, each instance of me deciding to sit and read instead of roughhousing with the other boys it was because I'm so feminine, crap like that. Toxic m…

I've had similar experiences, I adore cats and insecure men have teased me for it many times. Don't worry about it, bro. You sound like a good cat dad, just keep those things happy and the joy they give you will obliterate any shit that sad assholes give you.

I'm going to show this to my deluded brother in law, very well written.

Maybe try some reading in the other direction, check out some women authors and learn about their perspectives and thoughts. Persepolis and Women Who Run With Wolves are two that come to mind off the bat but there are countless options out there. I hope you can learn to see yourself as an individual, complete entity in your own right again and I'm sorry you struggle with these negative thoughts.

Holy shit. I'm new to this weird world but that sub is very upsetting.

I already mailed her that odious book he loaned me. It's full of handwritten notes, including several regarding his sons. Hopefully that helps. I'm going to touch base with her this week and return with a slew of questions. I'm very appreciative of this support.

Agreed. That's a rough way to grow up and I'm so sorry you have such a dysfunctional father. I don't really know the boys that well (I've been a pretty absent uncle, I'm sorry to say) so I don't even know how they lean on this. I tend to lead a very simple life so all this emotion and such is pretty overwhelming at times, I'm still thinking of things to ask my sister.

She's old enough now to have a good friend network to rely on and we're forming a stronger bond through this. She also knows that she has a guest bedroom at my place open if she needs to get away, no problem. His attitude toward his own daughter absolutely disgusts me.

Honestly, I never really cared for the guy but I figured that was mostly because he's military and those types tend to disagree with my worldviews. Turns out that I didn't like him because he's a scheming and paranoid nut. So that's validating, I guess. Once she's clear of this mess, I think she'll realize how much freer she is. But for right now, I probably won't mention that to her.

Thank you for your response. She's still in shock so it'll probably be a bit before she can examine the situation but I agree with you in that she will be better when she's free of him. I'm just worried about the kids, seems he might have plans to take the boys (there's also a daughter but she doesn't fit his worldview anymore so I guess he doesn't care about her). I also agree that's not much point in talking to him but I'll see if my sister is open to talking to you or maybe just passing along…

I'm in the same camp. I understand that she wants to find the man she fell in love with but that's gotta be pushed aside right now. I think she's coming around, I hope. Thank you for your input. I appreciate this sub and the users here.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
