I can manage my money quite well. I just hate the idea of being on red/or not increasing my funds just because I'm studying and I don't have time. It's pretty much just a thing you have to suffer through while you're in school. I mean, I'm not being dismissive here, I get that it sucks, but the schoolwork is the preparation for increasing your funds. It's kinda like building a house. At the beginning, you're only spending money, buying materials, paying laborers, etc. And it looks like it's just…

I've been struggling with this one recently. I've got a good friend who is having major relationship difficulties with his wife, and has been for a long time. On one hand, I'm like, "If it sucks as bad as you say it does, why don't you leave?" And on the other hand, I also realize I fought my own divorce tooth and nail, so it's kinda hypocritical of me to damn him for the same thing. But, dang it, I think he'd be much better off without her. And I want him to be happy. *sigh*

If HR is going to get on your case about it, it's time to "go to HR", as it were, and point out that he's brought it on himself. "OK, maybe it was insensitive, but I'm really tired of hearing him complain about it constantly. It's affecting my work."

4 years. I'm new here, so, I don't really have the "free from the plantation" mindset, I have to admit. But congrats to you since it seems to be making you happier.

I should do that. But, those car parts will be worth a lot of money in 40 years, right? *sigh*

Wesco's are amazing quality. And, made entirely in the USA, in far Northwest Oregon. And if you happen to be in the area, they'll happily give you a tour of the factory.

Ah, fair enough. I've done the telecommuting thing too, and I definitely know what you mean about isolation. And then there's the trap of "always being at work". It can definitely be nice to be able to put a clear line at the end of the day, and define "work" from "not-work". And, well... yeah, OK. I was a big beer nerd until I stopped drinking, so I'm with you on the microbrew thing. Cool, thanks for the answer. I kinda wasn't tracking all that well yesterday. Divorce anniversary. Only 4 years …

Yeah, but correcting her spelling was pretty golden. That was the part that actually made me laugh out loud. So, yes, you're right, but I'm glad I got a giggle out of it at least. :D

Gotta admit, that "Men are useless without money" line makes me think back to Fight Club. The overall idea of the movie was pretty ridiculous, but the more I think about it, and ponder the demand for "equality in jobs" (but only the high prestige, well paying, clean, low mortality rate ones, please!), the quote from the Policeman's Ball echoes through my memory. "The people you are after are the people you depend on. We cook your meals. We haul your trash. We connect your calls. We drive your am…

Gotta agree. In fact, this is pretty much what I came in here to reply to the OP. It's worth buying a good bed. It doesn't have to be big enough for two, but god damn it should make you sleep like a baby. Quality of sleep will improve your quality of life.

That is, in fact, precisely a technique I have used on occasion. "Yes, yes, you're very skilled. Unfortunately, your 125 lbs technique just got mashed into that wall behind you by my 250 lbs bulk." :D She did have the good grace to laugh when it happened, at least. Actually, that's probably a big part of why we still spar together, because she's at least a good sport about losing to someone who "should" be less of a combatant than she is. But she's also one of the more reality aware people I kno…

Wrestling may involve tactics and strategy, but you can't pull of moves, no matter what the technique is, with minimal power. Wrestling doesn't have force multipliers unless it's weight or strength, she's deficient in all those. It's sadly true. I've got an ex who has, oh, 30 years of martial arts training by this point? We're still good friends, and we spar occasionally, and have for the past 15 years or so. I have almost no martial arts training at all, save for a couple years of Krav, a while…

You understate their perfidy, my friend. They've been claiming that the world would end before I was born. Not that "it will end some day", but that the date it was first supposed to end was back in the 70's.

Oh, man. I have so many things to say in response to this comment! It's so good! The Green New Deal pushes for clean energy and bans nuclear energy even though it meets the definition of clean energy. Nuclear plants put out less radioactivity than coal plants, because coal has radioactive particulates embedded in it and these escape when you burn it, and coal plants aren't monitored for radioactive dispersal. (Though, of course, the GND would ban coal plants, too. So maybe that's a bad example.)…

She's an idiot who criticizes other people while offering no solutions of her own and rejects the one solution to the problem she claims to care about that might actually work. (Which is why I call her an idiot.) Also, public figures who make fools of themselves in public get talked shit about. Even if they're under 18.

Yeah, Roth IRAs are a very specifically American tax law based thing. Actually, come to think of it, so are 401(k)s. The purpose of those specific sorts of setups is deferred taxation on income. If you aren't subject to USA income tax, they won't do you any good. It's like, if you earn $50,000 per year, but you put $5,000 into your 401(k) plan, you only have to pay income tax (this year) on the $45,000. Also, a lot of times, companies will have "contribution matching", up to a certain percentage…

I'm not with you on the "no car" thing, but that's because building cars is my major hobby. I'd probably never have a BMW though unless I ever have the time and money to build "Project M350". (E36 era M3 with the 5.0 V12 from a 7 series shoehorned into it. :D ) But I have, like, at least 7 other things in the queue already, and I'm not getting any younger, so... That one may just stay in my head forever.

I'm curious (not being sarcastic, I actually just can't figure it out) why you were at the bar? It's generally cheaper (by a large factor) to drink at home, and if you were there to meet other friends, well, that makes sense but was this woman pushing her way into a private conversation? (I'd believe you if you said that was the answer, in fact, it's really the only thing that makes any sense.) "Going to the bar to meet other people" is generally the only good reason to go. OK, no, not true. Bee…

When it comes to "super comfortable" it's hard to beat custom made boots (like, measured to your feet) and you can still do real work in them. I have custom fit boots from the West Coast Shoe Company that I still wear 25 years later.

Hrm. Even as a philosophical anarchist, I have to agree with the value of "not getting in trouble with the law". They're bigger than you are, and unless you end up in Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos' shoes, will always have more resources to use to make sure that you lose, if you go head to head with them. Now, that's not saying that you should always follow the law blindly, of course. But avoiding trouble with the law? Oh yeah. That makes a lot of sense. ETA: The rest of this though, is fucking gold.

Just read the first few sentences, and oh gods yes. If I had back all the money, and even more importantly, the time, I spent chasing tail... well, I'd have a lot more finished projects, that's for sure.

Always complaints about "not enough women in tech", a high paying, high prestige, high status, low risk field. Never complaints about "not enough women in sewer repair".

I don't think it's actually that strange. A person in a line of work that's got high personal and legal risk will want to do repeat business with clientele who are known good actors. Whether it's prostitution or drug sales, the risk factor goes way down when you deal with people who have been "safe" business transactions in the past.

Well. Lots to unravel there. I'll be turning 43 in just about a month. I'm working on my fifth ... "career"(?) now. Heh. Yeah, I've had the "equality" talk with women before. "Funny how women -- who are usually in tech, themselves -- complain about how we 'need more women in STEM fields', but I've never once heard any of them lament the absolute and utter domination by men of various low-status and high-risk fields. Like garbage collection, or logging, or deep-sea fishing, or truck driving. I'm sure it's just an oversight. I'll be hearing about how women want to dig ditches and shovel shit and have a real cha…
